Arrrgh, my turn
the rear drum is not budging, i tried to pry with 2 large screwdriver, tap with large BFH, soak with BP blaster..... at the hub of course
there are 2 screw hole... for that purpose of pulling the drum..... anyone has the size of some other suggestion
BTW, there is something loose in there, i have a rythmic metallic rubbing sound, so something is stuck (last ressource will be to shave the retaining shoe pin, but i need to see that drum moving from the axle
Cheers
Michel
You can try backing off the self adjusters all the way (kinda rare they even work) thru the small slot at the bottom on the back of the backing plate.
Should free it right up and off if that's the problem, usually is.

Thanks, this is a good idea. The adjuster should work... they are new: no more than 5 years old.....

You need to turn your "tap with large BFH" into an 80% all out slam on the front face with a splitting maul.. works every time.

One time I had one that was rusted to the hub TIGHT, would not move. Brakes adjusted all the way out. After hiting several times with a BFH I got mad and hit it real hard, Busted a big chunk off it. After that I just continued busting it off in peices. After busting off a few more peices a crak went through the middle of it to where one of the lugs were and it finally came loose. Man, what a day that was.

I think I may be there soon. In fact I think you may have just predicted my future for today.

I had the same problem on one side of my rear axle on my first Cherokee it is not rusted the flange in the center of the axle is too big. I went to a parts place and rented a three jaw gear puller with a 12 inch reach (big enought to go around the drums). And use that to pull it off. It did the job without hurting the drums. After the second time I had to do this I took that axle to a machine shop and had the center flange machined down a few hundreds of and inch. I discovered it was the flange when I tried the drum from the other side and a new drum and realized they all stuck on there. After the machining I never had the problem again.

All done, a 10# sledge did the trick.

Michel, Sand the rust off the part of the hub that sticks thru the drum. Then, take a torch and heat the drum around this hub. only heat it about 20 seconds or so. I have seen them fall off after doing this sometimes. Good luck BG

thank you for reviving the old thread....
to be honest, i have not done anything to it...... but the heat is something i can do......
i like the 12" 3 jaw pulller..... don't need BFH on poor wagoneer......

If you 've got the brake shoes backed off, there is nothing else to hold it on except what I was talking about ( the hub). I know it sounds like it would not hold it on, but, I have seen it fall off with heat! the pullers only pull on the outside of the drum, the stuck part is the hub sticking out. Now , don't heat it cherry red, just warm it up up pretty good and just as close as you can to the hub in a circle. BG
