View Full Version : What is this bar thing on my trans mount?

So I've got this 82 Cherokee 4-door with 258, TF727, and NP208. I was under it working on the rear driveshaft and noticed some loose and missing bolts on the rear transmission mount assembly. One bolt is a strange one, all the way towards the drivers side, and has some rubber bushings on it like a sway bar link sort of, and it connects/stabilizes the long end of this funky bar thing that's part of the mount, I assume to stabilize drivetrain twisting and such. Anyway, this stabilizer bolt thingy had no nut on it on the underside of the crossmember (hangin loose), and so I found one that fits from my 'spare parts' bin and put it on, but it seems the bolt is stripped out once you get up to just about tight (prolly why the nut wasn't there). What is this strut/bolt/pin/link thing called, and where can I get a replacement?

This seems to be causing a problem where the exhaust comes in light contact with the front driveshaft yokes on some turns sometimes, which I'd like to eliminate, and may be part of the cause of my recent u-joint strap failure at the rear xcase output (funny lateral angles at that joint maybe, while driving, though I hope not more than a degree or two). I haven't checked the engine mounts yet, those might be part of the problem too.

Gotta love a loose drivetrain!

Here I am making this an all-chicago-suburbs thread...
Anyways, that thingy sounds like a transmision mount. You should be able to get them at a Parts Plus or Napa. Might be helpful to take the old one with you. If I am not mistaken, they are the same on big chevies.
If they don't have it, try jeepdoc.com
The guy who owns this used to have a shop in Addison, IL. and knows tons about Jeeps.
Or, you could get off the internet and call me,too. :D :D

number 630-710-5337 that's 630-710-JEEP

That's your tranny torque arm. I'm replacing the grommets on mine tomorrow. The Energy Suspension part no. is 2.1101R for the poly grommets. The bolt is prolly a dealer only item, but I've seen 'em in the junkyards. ;)

Thanks for the helpful posts (that excludes LRRH since getting off the net is never the best option). tongue.gif

I think I'll just pull it off next time I can, and see if I can rig a 'normal' grade-8 or such bolt to work properly. Unless of course someone can find the J# for the bolt if it is indeed a dealer item. smile.gif

If you've got driveshaft contact then chances your trans. mount is busted also and letting the whole drivetrain move around. Might 'oughta check that out while you're under there. It's a cheap item.

Thanks for the pointers everyone! I've been working on my Eagle lately, but now it's the weekend again and the little lady's Chero will be back home for long enough to tear some things apart (she don't like it much when I take parts off and she needs to drive it somewhere at the same time). smile.gif

JEEPGUZZZI: Well, go "check your shed"! (wasn't that a Beastie Boys album title?) It's officially been the weekend for like 13 minutes, get to it! tongue.gif I'll give you a buzz like tomorrow (sat) sometime in the afternoon, maybe if you have this torque arm mount thingy we can meet up somewhere and trade. LRRH will most likely be hanging around as well, in case you need a reason NOT to meet up with me. smile.gif
