Thanks for the info!

My alt only has 3 wires 2 small and one big. I have the stud on the back of the cs-144 going to the batt already  do i need to run one back to the batt again? and would i just need to run a wire into the ign.?

You need a pigtail for to interface between the old SI-style alternators to the CS-style alternators.

Look at the following... Image 44

Call NAPA, they have a pigtail that will plug into your existing harness to give the proper resistance to operate the regulator in the CS-144 Alternator, cost you under $20 Dollars.

Just bought the pigtail the other day...

Echlin EC-82.. $17.23 at the local Napa.

And of course they didn't have it in stock.

Thanks for the info guys. I have read through the oljeeps section on alts and im still lost prolly now more then ever.

This is how my NEW CUSTOM harness is laid out.

I have a power wire from the batt running to a dis block. That has 6 wires running out of it.
1. Black heavy wire to push button start
2. Gray to switch box to turn coil on and off
3. yellow wire for voltage reading
4. Orange for guage light power
5. Brake light switch power
6. White for backup light and interior light power.

From what i am reading i need to hook the "S" wire(large black) on the CS conector to the batt. and the "L" wire (thin black) to a light with a resistor??? I already have the wire running from the back of the alt to the batt why would i need to hook another up? Would i conect the "L" wire to the same point an the push button start???

Does your alternator look like this?

http://oljeep.com/gw/alt/edge_Alternator_Theory.html#Section_2

1"- this terminal (usually closest to the "Bat-terminal") is fed from the Ignition thru a lamp ("idiot light"), and is used to supply the magnetic field inside the alternator with the voltage needed to operate. When the engine is running, if the idiot light is on, the output voltage of the alternator is out of specification. Some vehicles utilized a resistor wire of 15.6 Ohms in lieu of the lamp to drop the voltage at this terminal to specified levels (this may be regulator specific).

Don't know if my write up will help any, but about half way down I cover what I did with the wiring:

Thanks thats what i was was looking for. i needed it dumbed down lol :o I went through my dad collection of misc electrical stuff and found some 100 ohm resistors but there 1 watt. would this be too much? I also found a small buld with about 35 ohms of resistance that i could use as a (idiot light) I think going over 100 ohms wont hurt but not sure.

Well i picked up a 1/2 watt 100ohm reistor and a led today and tried to get my alt to work but i fired the LED. Does the switched side of the dummy light circut need 12v? or am i missing something here?? I had the other end going to the alt plug and the other to a switched 12v sorce

Glad the writeup helped! I'm probably installing another one tomorrow (if the parts store has one on hand).
