Factory spec for a 79/360 is 8* with an acceptable spread from 6*-10* but keep in mind that's for a "new, bone stock" motor. I generally just advance the timing till she pings under load and then back the timing off a bit.

That tube is for a special magnetic pick-up or gizzmo timing device the dealers could buy. Zero is little below it, and on my 85 there is an A which I think is a referenc to the emmissions tag, but in any case the numbers are Before Top Center, not after.
-joe, whats the rpm for the 8 degree spec you gave?

For a 79/360 it's 800 rpm for the manual tranny and 600 rpm for the AT.
+/- 100 rpm for either is acceptable except for the J-20 w/manual which specs at 750-950 rpm.
