I wont touch the other question :D , But to answer your other, advance is more than TDC, retarded is less than.

Advance is BEFORE TDC.

Actually, all of our engines spark BEFORE the piston hits TDC. This give the flame a chance to travel and meet up with the piston.

The more you have it spark before TDC the more advanced your timing is. The less you have it spark before TDC the less advanced your spark is.

As you rev the engine the time it takes for the piston to reach TDC is less. The distribtor will advance the spark to help make up the difference.

Its not a dumb question at all.

Also, to advance your timing move the distriutor in the opposite direction of the rotation. Normally this will cause the engine to speed up a little.

To retart your timing, move it in the same direction as the distributor rotates.

This also helps explain why if you "advance" your timing to much - you hear detonation or "pinging". Basicly it is the flame front hitting the piston on its upward moton before it meets TDC </ End Rant> ;)

Yup!!! 10* BTDC is 2* ADVANCED more than 8*BTDC

hehe...boy can this get to be a long thread... ;)
