well i just capped one of the 3\8 fuel lines that the po had left opened at the top of my fuel tank. it leaked fuel every time the tank was nearly full and i hit the brakes. well now that i capped it it takes 10 minutes to fill the tank because the air flow is cut off. any ideas how to fix this? i was thinking of taking the cap off the line and using a check valve like we use on water lines in building construction . none of these valves are fuel rated. do you guys know of one that is?

why dont you re run the line? its either the return from the carb or the one from the canister?

Don't know about the later Js but my 73 has a fuel vent line check valve that is inside the box in the left front corner of the bed. I know that this vent line leaked on my truck when I filled it up untill I replaced the line.

You might be able to rig something up like an axle breather tube, but the end would have to be mounted up pretty high. I would just go the extra mile and route some plumbing back to the charcoal canister, where it's supposed to go. Also, I think the fuel tank is supposed to vent through the smaller hose connected to the filler pipe, so check and make sure nothing's arye there.

there is no canister anymore. do not know when or how but is gone. there is another return line hooked up. it goes to the fuel injection. does anyone know if the fuel check valve for the '73 is still in stock somewhere?

If you have the stock tank, you can just put all the vapor recovery gear back on and the tank can vent through that. You need the vapor canister, a bunch of hose/tubing, and the liquid check valve. If you found any similar age Jeep in a wrecking yard, you could take the parts and they should work.
There's really no reason to remove the vapor recovery system - it has no effect on performance, and requires nearly zero maintenance. Clearly your tank doesn't work right without it.
