I want to check all of my vaccum connections on the motor and make sure everything is working correctly. It is just way overwhelming. Can anyone help me with where to start and how to do it all? My engine still has trouble starting sometimes, and when it is cold it idles a little rough until it warms up. What can you tell me?

thanks

Ted

Ted, I would get a factory shop manual. In it will be how to test EGR valves, CTO's etc.
In the mean time eye ball your motor and figure how many feet of hose you have. Don't forget all the vac hoses under the dash for the heater/def controls, x-case controls, front axle controls...see where this is going http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
Then go down and buy new hose. Most of it is only about $0.25/ft with the bigger stuff maybe $0.45/ft and replace ALL of it. It's prolly never been done since the rig was new so it's time. While you're doing that look carefully at all the vac connections on the vac resvoirs etc. The plastic nipples can sometimes be cracked and leaking and not be very obvious w/o a close look.
See how it runs after that's done. If still poor then start testing/checking individual components. Replacing vac hoses every few years especially the ones in the eng bay and under the rig exposed to eng heat, weather etc is good PM like changing a fan belt every 5 years or so even if it ain't broke.
Yeah, I know you're cussing all the vac stuff right? I did too when I first started messing with these biggun's. What's up with vac operated heater/def controls etc...BUT I've since learned to appreciate vac stuff. It's way easier to trace/replace vac hoses than to diagnose and fix wiring/electrical glitches http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

ditto, there are two sizes.take a sample of each and get about 10' of each. do a piece at a time so as not to get confused. i made each piece a tad long and trimmed it for a final fit. i used a pair of telecom shears for a cutting tool. chalk it up to routine maintenance.
