So whats it take to replace stock flares? Is there any difference between J flares and WT Chero flares. How do the rear flares attach. Whats the easist way to take off the old ones?

I believe the rear W/T flares rust out quicker than the J-trucks. Main reason is that the W/T flares are double layered to hold that dirt and moisture. The flares are the same on the front.
Easiest way to take off the rear flares or any flares would be a SawZaw ;)

haha mr brock TX.

I should have seen that one coming i guess. Whats the easiest way to take em off and be able to re-use them? I had heard that WT flares were different as far as the double wall but kinda wanted to verify.

my flares on the GE are coming off a little bit at a time (as in rust). I plan on replacing them with Raybuck's fiberglass flares, eventually.

and yes, they are double layered :(

Lindel you remember the flares on "crusty"? assorted dents and flat spots.

sort of, did'nt pay much attention to them except to notice they were better than mine, but most WT/J-truck rear flares are.

It will be a lot easier to repair your flares than replace them. I saw your J-10 before you bought it and your flares are definitely more easily repaired than replaced.

Pascal any suggestions? Once I heard that they were welded to the wheel hump I thought the same thing.

Just do some basic body work to the flares and they will be fine. I definitely would not remove them.

The one thing i'm worried about is one of them is pretty flat. Not sure how to take it back to original.

yes they are welded to the tubs sawsall is the easiest way to take them off then you have to weld the new ones on and then your bondo I prefer to clean up the ones I have and do my repairs with fiberglass and matting you can make them look real close to original except for the magnet test. My dad did mine for me 6 years ago he's old school and im better with glass then lead

Ok so does anybody have any suggestions for repair of fender flares? Pictures would be great.

I have thought of using some steel rod, to form the outer framework, and then welding replacement sheet metal on top of that. It would have to achored to the body, and probably reinfored in a couple of places, but that shouldn't be any big deal.

If I do it this way, I won't be using 2 layers, for any reason! Not one of Jeep's better ideas.

I decided to repair mine. PO tried to rip the driver side off. After alot of massaging with a big hammer and bondo. I think it turned out good. http://www.fullsizejeeps.com/jeeps/files/1974-1983-Cherokees/Dsc00016.jpg

I am going to be converting my waggie to a W/T with extended wheelbase in the rear... lotsa work... taking the entire wheelwells out of the donor W/T to include the flares.... progress pics will be taken.... it's alotta work just to do the flares.

RB, and all, what I'm planning will do away with the inner layer (or all of it that I can get to), and will leave just the outer shell, supported by about 1/4" thick rod.

I saw this done with custom made flares on an a Mustang, and see no reason why it wouldn't work, with a little patience, and time.

No. I didn't think about taking pics before I started. To give you an idea of what it looked like. The PO had swiped something, smashing in the flare in front of the tire and then caught the flare behind the tire and pulled it back. I used my die grinder to cut out sections of the inner liner to get to the back side of the flare. Once I had the flare back in shape. I welded the pieces back in and finished the outside surface up with Bondo. It took me awhile to get lines right on the Bondo.
