i was cruising a junkyard yesterday, and found this tranny with a ford bolt pattern... however, the JY owner said it was a borg warner from a 70s ford truck?! i've never heard of a borg warner tranny in a ford truck... so am i just ill-informed, or did the owner really mean it was a np435 or t18?
BTW, it had a 2wd tailshaft... how could i replace that so as to bolt on a transfer case??
Pssst...Willy, the T-18 is a Borg-Warner trans smile.gif

the 435 is a new process case,so you shuold be able to find the little circle NP logo stamped onto it somewhere if thats what it is. the t18 will have "t18" cast into the side of it somewhere. ive read that ford used the t18 and 435 in various years, and from what i cna gather the t18 was used primarily in 2wd truks, for some reason.4wd applications usually got a np 435 with a 205 attached.
if its a t18,you can swap on a jeep t150 belhousing with minor mods. this is great for a short wheelbase cj,but in a FSJ will put the shifter even further under the dash than the the 6 cyl version of the FSJ t18,if being used behind a 360.
no matter what the tranny is,you will eed to swap tailshafts and bolt on an xfer case adapter. either factory pieces,or aftermarket.
im not sure how likely it is to find a close ratio t18 in a 2wd ford truck,so youll want to count the input turns and determine if the tranny is even a wide ratio and worth the effort.
further questions? smile.gif

lol i thought the t18 was a tremec...
how expensive is a 4wd tailshaft for a t18? and how much should i offer the junyard fella? i've heard $600 for a working 4WD version... but for a questionable 2wd tranny, who knows?
my cherokee has a t15 tranny already, but it's about to lose a bearing (whine whine whine)... the t18 would bolt onto that, right?
about the dash... i could just have a new shifter bent, right?
thanks again smile.gif

Last year I had a really good T-19 given to me....After checking what I would have to do to put in in my truck, I decided it was cheaper to get rid of it and did. Heres what I thought needed done for the swap.
1. Different input shaft
2. Different mainshaft(longer)
3. 4WD adapter(about $400.00 from Advance Adapters)
4. Re-drill bellhousing
All that and when installing it the crossmember would need moved forward also....Way too much work for what the T-19 was. Now had it been a 6. something ratio for first gear.......I may have gone for it.....Hope this helps you decide what to do....ASWSR

Isn't the T-19 a T-18a with syncros all 4 gears? I thought the only close ratio one was the regular T-18...? Could be wrong.

According to what I've read on these trannies, the T-18 is a 4 speed with a non-syncronized 1st gear.....the T-18A has 1st gear syncronized, and the T-19 is a different trans entirely.
All three are BW made.

The T-19 is the only one with a 1st gear syncro.
The early T-18's were wide ratio with 6.32 1st gears. In 69 or so the close ratio came out with 4.xx 1st gears and was the badged the T-18. The old 6.32 geared trannies then became the T-18A's

All three are basically the same tranny (I think). The T-18/T-18a differ by gear ratios and I the T-19 is a T-18a with all gears synchronized from what I've seen.
Of course I could be totally wrong, too. smile.gif

Yes and no smile.gif
The T-18 was either 6.32 1st geared or 4.02 1st geared depending on year built All T-18A's run a 6.32 1st gear. The T-19 with synchro first could be 6.32/5.11/4.02 1st geared depending on what the trans was used in.

at any rate, willypete, you will prolly be time and money ahead to simply obtain a FSJ t18 from a rig with the same engine as yours.
the 2wd ford tranny(assuming it is a wide ratio ford t18)is hardly going to be a bolt in. youll need to modify your belousing, and completely disassemble the tranny to swap tailshafts. as kyjman said,an adapter kit from AA or novak is gonna add $300-$400 to the purchase/install price,as well as paying someone to rebuild the tranny and install the tailshaft,if youre not comfortable disassemblig the tranny and getting all the little sticks back in when youre putting it back together. itd be silly to open it up and not replace whatever gears and bearings are questionable,so add that to the overall cost. finally, you can add driveshaft, and sometimes exhaust mods to the list.
even if you could find a factory t18/d20 tailshaft and adapter from smewhere like www.4xheaven.com (http://www.4xheaven.com) it is still gonna cost a couple hundred $$$,and you still have to disassemble the tranny to install, and you still have the belhousing prollem.
if you scout around,you may find a complete FSJ parts rig with a t18 for $500 or less.my t18 was donated by a $300 77 j20. smile.gif
