How difficult is it to remove and replace a TH400?

Need some advice on how difficult it is to remove and replace a TH400. No shop...driveway only and working with hand tools. My main concern is knowing if the engine needs to be moved forward and connecting/disconnecting the QT transfer case.

Any tips/tricks?

I remove the QT low range, then the QT, then drop cross member, then the T400. Drain T400 and QT first and put support under the tranny. Two Words: Tranny Jack. This will make life much easier. If you are not careful with QT removal and re-install, the 2 front seals will get crimped on the tranny tailshaft. I use two long bolts screwed in from the front on the driver side of the QT adapter to help support the weight as I remove or replace QT.

agree, remove the tcase first and get a trans jack.

Had one of these for years. I use an extension, a swivel joint, and a 1/2 impact set on low, makes it easier;)

One other thing to remember is the TH400 is clocked slightly to the right when you go back together, as the jack is only adjustable fore and aft, I use a wooden shim for the side tilt.

Do I have a TH400 for QT? That's a rhetorical question, right? :D Of course I do! Bring it! Worst case, I give you something else to drive home, Lord knows I have enough laying around.

Bob, get a tranny jack from harbor freight. Cheap and it's a fairly decent one. I did mine in the driveway on my J-10 with HB's jack. The only issues I had was that the QT was RTV'd to the tranny, and I HAD to take them out together. Jack worked just fine that way.

I did have to take the tranny/QT off the Jack to get them out from under the Jeep.

It really made re-installing everything a lot easier too. Took me about an hour to get the tranny and QT installed, including the lines and all.
