Maybe burning off something that was in the used head, or in the Cylinders from the swap????? Who knows, if it has quit smokeing I would say you are good to go ;)

hmmm,
I was always told don't add oil to a hot engine. In part this is because the dipstick is marked for a cold engine and you could over fill.

Which makes me think...where'd the dipstick come from? I've heard horror stories about guys using the wrong dipstick on a rebuild.

So here's where my imagination took me: You overfilled the oil, and this got burnt off. That's why you had smoke and then no smoke.

Either that or it's possessed.

True story....
I helped a buddy rebuild the top end on his Cheby 3/4ton. We pain stakingly went thru everything and took our time. We went to fire it up and in less than 5 min she started smoking bad,I mean bad.
I watched my buddy Louie's heart drop big time.
Thinking the worst he said let it run and if she blows up...fine.Funny thing the engine sounded good, no loud clunks or what not. After about 20min it stopped smoking as bad, after 30min it stopped all together.
It turned out to be some motor oil he accidently spilt got trapped down in 90deg bend of the exhaust pipe. All was good after it burned off. :D
