i have always been raised around cars trucks. and my father always said never run pensoil or q-state. becauce it builds up gunk deposits. well when i bought my 86 gw last month i decided to
change the intake and carb for needed gas mileage
(and it did help by the way)it was full of gunk. so i used a shop vac carefully and cleaned it out best i could. what is everyones thoughts on certain oils doing this? or is it just neglect?

The Pennsylvania oils had a reputation for sludge formation. I was told by my dad, that this was due to the high sulphur content of the Pennsylvania oils. How much actual Pennsylvania oil, as compared to arab oil, is still used in those oils is anybody's guess.

... We had a long thread on this subject here a few months ago. Seem most of the members here and my mechanic friends like Castrol but I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole.
... Castrol lied about their applications rating and had to be sued by API. With my driving habits Pennzoil has worked very well for the last 45 years and I am presently maintaining six running vehicles including two 2001 model cars plus my 18 hp tractor.
... I think sludge has to do with improper engine temperature. I did have a sludge problem with Q-state and Havoline but that was long ago and far away
Good luck and http://www.michiganjeepers.com/forums/images/graemlins/wave.gif and Hope you had some Happy Holidays … CUL.. ds..

I've been using Valvoline and changing oil every 2k mi or so. No problems with sludge deposits. With this new 401, I'm thinking of going synthetic, like Mobile-1.

By recommendation of a Jeep place here in Denver, I run only Valvoline SAE 30W. They said the multi-viscocities build up more wax , etc., and it doesn't get cold enough here for straight 30 to ever be a problem. No problems yet!

Only Valvoline here. But a trusted mechanic swears by Amsoil. Expensive stuff, but it's what he runs in his race cars.

I've been using Valvoline High Mileage 20W-50 for three oil changes now, and I'm really impressed with it.
I have a bit of blowby in my engine (I reconditioned the engine without any machine work on the block), and after about 1500 miles regular oil would start to get thinned out from the tiny bits of gas and other impurities that get into the oil. But this High Mileage stuff maintained its viscosity. I'm sold on it.
For a newly rebuilt engine, however, I would break it in with any kind of decent motor oil and then run synthetic for the rest of the motor's life.

As I've posted before, my second job is in a parts store, and a lot of the same poeple are in and out, so I get as lot of feedback on different probucts that work or don't. A lot of these people are BS'ers so i generally try to gleen out the non-relible info, and stick with the guys i know are mechanics proffesionally, or I have seen the stuff they have rebuilt/restored. The gen consensus on pennsoil is that it leaves a hard film on surfaces, especially when used in short trip type driving. But this has been from engine teardowns that were high milage, so it really can't be said it resulted in early failure. Everyone agrees Castrol is great. Valvoline has no complaints (BTW carquest oil is valvoline).Quaker state is said to have a lot of "wax" in it (so what does that mean?)and Motorcraft is supposed to be good oil. An old farmer type told me he "burnt up" two engines on Havoline and will never use it again. I use valvoline on all my and my kids vehicles and Mobile 1 in my wife's VW. I think oil brand is a lot like beer and women, everyone has their preference for whatever reason.

I run Vavoline in all the vechicles that run on gas and Rotella-T in the diesels. Don't forget to use a good quality filter too, I use Wix filters and they make the NAPA premium and CarQuest premium filters.
valvoline so far. i am very pleased with it

Penzoil is junk. Never use it if you care about your engine. I had it in my pontiac before I tore the engine down for rebuild. There was all kinds of nasty sludge and gunk all through it. It was gross. I'll never run penzoil again. I use WalMart brand alot. The guy there told me it is produced for them by Valvoline, but its ALOT cheaper, especially the full synthetic or synth-blends.
I've never had any problem with WalMart oil like I did with penzoil.

Valvoline by far. Wax is actually wax. When they process crude into gasoline it contains toulene, wax, keytone, alcohol and additives to lower the knock number or octane. Every pennsoil motor pulled down has had a foul odor and burnt oil. The wax does build a film and is added for viscosity, which is measured by how long it takes a set amount of oil to drip through a determined orafice. I use 10-40W in Valvoline synthetic blend. It gives the protection of a synthetic and the cost of petroleum. I am soon to move to 50W racing after I survey the damage of a 70,000 mi motor from the previous owner.

I use Kendall GT1 in my drag car and one time a Torco oil rep tried to get me to use his products, I said no it cost to much, blah blah blah, anyway , throught the discussion came the quality of off the shelf oils, non-synthetic, and he told me kendall is the best and that penzoil is the worst, Penzoil sold more because they spent all they're money on advertising while other company's where doing R+D.

Valvoline full synthetic for me. Engines are
clean as a whistle inside when I tear them down
after many years of use with Valvoline oils.
Really a great product line.
I use Castrol and have never had an oil related problem, at least so far konock on wood!!

Only valvoline, having a company that has 10 vehicles and lots of equipment, we go through it by the barrel. To date, we've never lost an engine from oil falure and have logged over 1.5 million miles on these trucks without a problem. Also, we have run our equipment for thousands of hours rarely see an engine problem. Good luck

we laugh at amsoil. we had their 20w50 wt synthetic in our race car, 71 vega, 400 block, alot dont to it. all steel body, and it was in the 10.50 range. was running it in there. blew the motor up. pulled it apart. broke cam in 3 places, every bearing was either blued or nonexistant, broke crank, chunks out of block, 7 good pistons left. one was sideways in the cylinder. we never used amsoil again. they tested the oil thats came out of the motor. oil good, alot of metel in it. what dumbareses!
I like Castrol, never had a prob with it. We use Valvoline (Carquest) at school and haven't heard about any problems with it, i wouldn't touch Havoline or Pennzoil(sp?), personally. Thats just how i have been raised though, YMMV.

Note:
Good oil is good oil, but good oil means nothing with a crappy oil filter.
My dad always told me to use the best oil filters money could buy. In other words stay away from the $1 Fram's and Purolators.
Seems like a lot of guys here use the Wix filters, we all hate Fram.... what other kinds of filters are out there that ya'll use on a regular basis?
I always buy K&N oil filters, but i'd really love to find a high-capacity oil filter. And somewhere i saw an oil-filter with cooling fins on it. Interesting to say the least......

I put a motor flush in my engine..changed the filter's and oil over to valvoline, runs much better now......increase oil pressure as well....but probably need to clean the oil pickup....

I had the head mechanic of the Archer Bros. racing team advise that I use Valvoline. I have and will continue to adhere to this advice.
For those not familiar, the Archer Bros team races Dodge Vipers and one of them has a race shop in Duluth, MN (the next town over from mine). They also sponser other types of racers.
Here is a link to the racing accessories shop and I have toured theri facility and been in their garage (the one pictured on their site) and seen many vipers and other type of high performance cars in various states of modification.

… Since you seem to be a petroleum engineer… I begin to worry. My 401 V-8 has 165,000 miles on it. Just when might I expect to have to start scraping the Pennzoil wax and sludge out of this engine.
… Do you think I might be able to drive it to Ouray and back again this year like I’ve been doing for the past 18 years? When does all this crud happen??
… I bought my first NEW car in Dec. 1952 and put Pennzoil in it. I guess I am a creature of habit. I have used other brands of oil because the POs had been using a particular band in the cars I had bought from them.

how did you do a motor flush? I would do one, but I was thinking.. if it knocks all of the sludge and crap out of my engine, where will it go? Seems like it would all just get clogged up in the oil passages or somewhere else.
