Hey everyone, I just bought My 1st jeep on Tuesday!!! It is a 1989 Grand Wagoneer. Took it through emissions and evap this is what it looked like.

HC 6.08 needs to be under 3.00 FAIL
CO 216 needs to be under 25.00 FAIL
NOX .45 can go up to 4.50 PASS

NOW THE EVAP

FAILED with a lillte note that the tech wrote it says NO Tank Line. there could find any pressure on the cap or find the lines.

Now I am replacing the power valve and rebuilding the carb to drop the co. I bought a charcoal canister and am replacing that to help with the evap. I dropped the fuel tank and checked the hoses they were ok . I am replacing the pvc and erg as well. Anything else I should be doing?????? Any help would be great !!!! By the way , I think I have been in the Jeep Closet even with all this going on I am still in love with her. The GW that is.

Thanks Funny Girl :D

Welcome to the board and Welcome from Mesa.

Did they do a pressure test on your tank vent? I would be a smaller hose, probably 5/16" that would go either to the carb or the canister (I forget which one).

On my 82 they just look to see if the hoses are all there, they no longer pinch it with the vice grips and attach vacuum to the gas tank at the filler.

Where did you find a canister? I need one too...

I found the canister at Napa I am going to have to make a minor adjustment to it but found that info on a different forum will post the link on the bottom, also there is a great site that is called Rock Auto parts. They have everything and are super Cheap , picked up erg valve for $52 wooo hoo! When I went through emissions I did not see where they put the connection or plugged it at they made me wait in the booth. So No clue there??? But I did notice that since I changed the gas cap the tank now has pressure when I take the cap off so that has to be an improvement right? I put on a locking one.

wow, that's a great cannister write up. I am going to go do that on mine.

Standing in the booth you would have seen them hook something up to your tank and apply pressure or vacuum to it. They USED to do this on my 81 waggy but stopped. I think, in part, because they had to clamp the vent tube in the engine compartment. As a general rule they don't like to 'touch' things, I think it limits their liability. So I 'think' they have stopped this test. They do 'test' the cap so maybe you had a bad one and replacing it worked??? I think if they didn't put anything on your tank and replacing your cap causes some pressure then you are good on that end. my two cents..

They did put the thing in the tank , and also attached it to the cap as well. I know they attached something under the hood that was the thing I could not see or what they attached it to. Wow using the word thing way to much ..lol :o

Interesting, they must do it for some model years after 1982.

ok so after My friend bill did all the hoses this month I went and got another 3 day tag so I could take her to a shop and have the carb set. This is the last tag I could get since it goes by the car not the owner. I did not know that. So I took her to a place that was recommended by a friend. Well this guy takes My baby in the back then comes back and says I am missing hoses and there are a lot of them missing. Whoa wait a minute. Me and My friend bill who is a mechanic for the police department spent 6 hours properly connecting these hoses , so I know he is full of crap. So I go back to the bay and I can tell he has removed and cut some hoses. He also tells Me he can't adjut the carb the way it is. I explain to him nicely at first he is smoking crack and I know that when he drove it back to his bay all the hoses where in the right spots. and None were missing . So the bill went from $65 to 200 and he tells Me if I continue to throw My hissy fit he will keep My jeep and call the police to have Me escorted of the property. What a dork. So I cough up My cash and leave Now My jeep is stalling and idleing way to low. I ONLY have till MONDAY to get her through Emissions otherwise I will have to wait till NEXT YEAR!! WHICH I CAN NOT DO. SO I AM PLEADING FOR HELP HERE. IF ANYONE CAN COME OVER AND HELP ME WITH THE HOSES THEY TOOK OFF AND SET THE CARB FOR ME . I CAN OFFER COLD BEER OF YOUR CHOICE AND FOREVER GRATEFUL. I LIVE NEAR 43RD AVE AND BETHANY HOMME ROAD. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED...SINCE I AM READY TO BURST INTO TEARS AND SET HIS GARAGE ON FIRE!

THANKS
Maggie

Well that bites big time.

Any of you Phx people know something about an '89GW?
I don't even have a book or diagram covering anything newer than '72.

I can take some pic's of an '86 GW 360 but they are going to look like a mesquite bean farm.

ok here is another frigging update. Got the hoses fixed, that fox thought he could outsmart Me but no. lol .. So I did take it to another shop and this is the issue . I need a new carb. Mine has passed on and is leaking like a sieve. So I have a brand new A/C clutch just laying around .. anyone have a carb they could part with even trade. I really need to get My girl through emissions and a new carb should do it. After paying all these mechanics My budget is just to tight right now. So if your up for a trade Let Me know Please!!

Thanks

Perhaps some police friends of yours should pay ole jeep hoser a visit after all this mess... I would at least take him to small claims and get it on file. Your friend who helped put on all the hoses would probably testify for you and you win your money back plus a bit extra the judge would give you for the slick willy move he pulled.
