I got a hold of Jaspers and they wanted $2500.00 and my engine to rebuild with a three week turn around. The only plus I saw was having my own engine back with a 7 year warranty.

I would have a local performace builder do the rebuild. Reuilt engines are junk in my book. They are reusing parts that are reground or refinished in bulk. Where as a performance builder takes pride and is used to building engines to exact tolerances. As well you can do some low budget upgrade work that will really improve the life of your engine. Such as a Total Seal 2nd or top ring, port and polish the heads double rev springs and chrome retainers. Blah Blah Blah I could go on and on.
talk to some performance shops around your town and get some prices and check their rep. But please please do not buy a "rebuilt" engine from an auto parts store or jasper.

just my $.02

mojoDitto. Ever try and get warrantee work done on a rebuilt from autoparts stores or jasper? Might as well try to skip a rock ten times. it might happen, but the odds are against it. Do it yourself or have someone local do it. That way you can watch them do it and make sure they do it right. If a shop is doing a good job, they won't mind if you come in with a dial indicator and check chrankshaft endplay and what not. heck, my shop encourages it, I think they want to put me to work...

I would have to disagree. I had a local shop with a good reputation rebuild my motor to stock. The shop was recommended by many people, been in business for 20+ years.
They did a poor job. Uses oil, quart per thousand miles or less. I will buy a Jasper next time.

I got a Jasper just cause of the warranty. I have not heard that the warranty work was that hard to get approved. The gripes I have heard about Jasper have been from people who have never owned and are just repeating "ghost stories."

I am not defending Jasper as this is my first time owning one. I've only got 2,000 miles on it now and it has not used hardly any oil since the 500 mile oil change.

We will see.

As for rebuilds when I bought my Wagon with a "rebuilt" motor for whatever that meant. 500 miles later and it was toast.

The local Amaco wanted $4500 to exchange mine w/ a rebuild!
Are rebuilt trannies from Advanced Auto any good?

The only news I have heard from a jeep owner he owns a little cherokee by the way. He complained about his jasper and marshal motors cranks breaking I just keep reminding him it is a 2.8 ltr chevy what do you expect it to do after 10,000 to 20,000 miles. Snap crackle pop.

So this brings up the question, if you do buy an engine from Jasper and something goes wrong with it do you have to pull it out and send it back to them. Or do they local "dealers" that will do the repair work for them.
As for the dude that had a local recommended repair shop do shotty work, have you contacted them about it. If so and they refuse to make good on the problem I would contact your local BBB and file a complaint.

I have a Jasper in my 87 that has about 30,000 miles on it now. I have had no problems with it thus far(knocking on fake wood grain!) It still has plenty of get up and go and runs fantastic. I do not have to add oil between changes. I am happy with it. My buddy has a Jasper rebuilt 351 in his Bronco and it is fantastic. All I am saying is that I have had a good experience with my Jasper rebuilt 360.

Ive had pretty good experience with my gopher rebuilt. One thing I would do differently is either put it in myself or find someone who "really" know what their doing. I've got an authorized Jasper guy across the street that I do some photo work for..he told me that it's not worth getting the jasper unless you have an authorized jasper guy that has a good relationship with the company to install it..that way you've got the mechanic to stand behind his work along with the warranty..

i bought a remanned motor first time aroun. $1600 out the door for a premium long block. a a year and a half later when my mechanic pulled the proken motor apart we saw bad machining, they never changed the oil pump gears as stated, and various other problems. but i have heard jasper and atk to be reputable builders.

so for the next time i had him rebuild a short block he found. i am very pleased with the work. he knew me from around and i was barely out of high school. he let me buy some of the parts to save on his mark up. i was in the shop evry other day checking up on it. i made sure i let them be aware that i knew what should be done and i was going to be checking progress. the labor and build were less than $2500.

do it yourself. you can fully rebuild a motor with some nice performance parts for about $1600 including the machinework, and an engine stand to work on the motor. by far the most inexpensive way to go, and you will get exactly the motor you want.

I have 31,000 on a long block from Jasper.A lifter
is starting to get really rowdy until FULLY warm.
The warranty is lengthy, but;try to make a claim, and you will see all the "red tape" and BS.
involved.Kind of like when you take a broken Husky
tool back to Home D#*+t.Total frustration.

DON'T go to Autozone. My brother made that mistake. Motor blew in two weeks. Took a month to get another due to the red tape. Ended up selling his Waggy because of it.

i pulled a trans out of my friends mustang - 30k miles on this thing and it has a jasper tranny - checked paper work dealership replaced trans at 20k; tear down trans - what a pile of dog crap, it looked like the gear train had sat in a mud puddle before they picked it up out of it and threw it in the tranny - totally destroyed in 10k miles

like previously said big company reuses marginal parts and plays the odds that it will make it out of warranty - speaking of warranty i have dealt with these "warranties" before at work - first off they'll use every loop hole in the book to get out of it - didyou replace this? or that? like i don't know by looking if water pump is any good!!! christ! they'll have you replace EVERYTHING on the engine during replacement just to be qualified for warranty - then try finding someone to replace it under "warranty" they only pay a set amount per hour for warranty replacement - usually well below what the shop charges leaving the customer to pay the rest

oil use can be for many reasons, not necessarily bad engine

From what I can tell, Jasper uses one of the local intallers which you have to go back to if there is a warranty problem.

I do not have a Japer in my own rig, but I have installed Jaspers in a Dodge Caravan and a Honda Accord. If they can have and hold a great warranty on these new advanced engines, I think that thier 360s or 401s would be a great buy. It is my plan to use Japer when I need an engine. The name is great, and they can do just about any upgrade you want, like an RV cam.
