NEED AN EDUCATION ON A 1970 J4000

I'm going to be picking up a 1970 j4000 this week...I had a quick 2 minutes to look at it yesterday and noticed 5 lug ford wheels on it..is it a 3/4 ton with 5 lugs?
It has the 350 buick engine with 4-speed...what transfer case will it have and what rearend?
body is good but has the glass broken out so i will probably part it out as i need parts for a j-20...
anyone need a buick engine?

J4000 only specifies the wheelbase, not the GVWR. If you have the VIN, that will tell you something about the truck. There is a VIN lookup in the Tech Library, one for each year.

5-lug could be Dana 44s front and rear, or 44 front 60-2 rear for the 'middle' GVWRs. They all have Dana 20s.

Re the engine, advertise on the CJ and Jeepster forums. The 350 is a great replacement for the 225 V6, especially in a Jeepster with the TH400.

Front will be a dana 44, rear could be the same as front (check diff cover)or most likely it's a dana 53 or a dana 60 (not sure when last year for 53 was). It will have the dana 20 TC and the Buick engine is well worth keeping.

Is the bell a std BOP pattern or does it use an adapter like the v-6? will an AMC v-8 bell work on that trans?
I can redrill a bell for the trans pattern but will the depth of an AMC bell work with that trans?

I would like first dibs on ac equipment, power steering equipment, four bbl intake if it has one and all the necessary brackets. Let me know...I love my Buick 350!

I do have an early 455 cast iron 4bbl though i would sell...and i think p.s. pump and brackets my neigbor brought over to me...came off his car...

The stock Th400 will have the Buick "nailhead" bolt pattern, not BOP. There will be a factory adapter used to mate it to the motor. All th400's prior to 74 used that bolt pattern and an adaptor regaless if behind an AMC or Buick motor.

The 5th digit of the VIN gives you the GVWR.W= 5000lb, X=6000. Y=7000, Z=8000 or 8600 if DRW. If W rear axle will be D44, X and Y use a semi-floater D60-2, X uses conventional D60 full floater.

Looks like you're covered with all the info posted above. All I was going to add was that my 60-2 rear has "60-2" cast into the top of the diff housing.

Yes, the transmission will have a long stickout and may have an adapter (spacer) between the bell and the transmission. Some of these have an odd bellhousing with the spacer and bellhousing cast together, but I'm not sure which app has what. But all the V8 apps will have something like a 12" stickout for the input shaft... and I presume that the different V8s have different stickouts. So you may have trouble making that T-18 work with an AMC pattern bell.

One possibility is to replace the input shaft with the short Ford shaft, then the input will have the right depth for the T-150 or T-176 AMC pattern bell.

I have a bell with an adapeter between the bell and tranny from an 80's wagoneer that had a 360..then i have std AMC bells in both depths..I am a manual tranny guy since i race with a jerico in my drag car so I thought I might use this tranny in one of my other automatic trucks..
I have to get the thing home 1st..lol
