Welcome to the forum. The charcoal canister is an important and often overlooked component to the motor's general health. In a nutshell it recieves vapors from a variety of places and either recyles them or safely allows a minimum amount of emissions. The most important donator would be fuel vapors from the gas tank. You cannot safely remove the canister under any conditions except to do maintenance. The pressure relief valve is one of the most often overlooked replaceable parts to the engines health and should be inspected (read replaced) since its doubtful it was ever done by the PO. Not doing so won't stop you in your tracks but will cause a variety of bad symptoms. The canister is easily removed and serviced but make sure you mark which lines coming into it and replace them in the correct order.
Good luck

The canister is part of your emission controls. It stores fuel vapors and sends them to be burned. I don't think it would be a good idea to disable it because it would mess up your system and cause it to run poorly. Hope this helps.

If you have the OEM carb that your rig came with you need to have it hooked up. If you have a fter market carb, such as the Edelbrock 1406 carb, it cannot make use of the charcoal canister.

Stuka's right on the money with the Edlebrock set-up. Just remember that doesn't give you a license to pull out the canister. Just leave the purge valve nozzle on top unconnected. It still needs to be there for fuel vapor/trickle.
