I just hate the look of the stock roof rack (knowing I'll never use it) and want to remove it. Maybe someone who has done this can give me some advice about plugging all the holes left behind. I don't have access to a welder so I was thinking of using fiberglass to cover the holes, what do you guys think will give a good water proof fix?

the hole is about the size of a penny... if you trim down a penny and glue it in place you may be able to patch it, seal it, with some resin... and sand it down

Use some silicone and install some plastic plugs from the hardware store.

X2 -- ACE has a set of black plastic/rubber plugs that when you press on they they will fit the hole exactly...use the silicone and no leaks.
I also use some small white plastic plugs for the screw holes from the chrome strips...they have an end that squeezes together as you push it through the hole...a bit of silicone on those too.

I'm a huge fan of using 5200 marine sealant...you don't even really need to plug the holes if you use it, and it's un-doable if you have the patience to peel the 5200 up.

i used the rubber seals that are on there, the ori bolts and some washers. seals great! but soon i will be welding the holes and painting.

Does anybody have pics of their FSJ with the roof rack off? I've been thinking about doing this too but wasn't sure how it would look.

KoolDaddy I just took mine off and cleaned up the roof, going to go get some silicon and some plugs to fill the holes. I can post a pic with it off but I know there is some jeep pics around here w/o them because they were my inspiration :)

if the plugs are in good shape why not use em if not bjs has the set. you never know if you go to sell the truck the next owner would probly want the roof rack.

I picked up some 3/8" nylon plugs for the screw holes and 9/16" plugs for the larger holes along with some silicone. I'm gonna have to drill out the holes a bit but at least I don't have to make another trip. And once they're plugged I don't plan on putting the roof rack back on or keeping the roof rack around.
As for future owners I think if they wanted to buy it that would be the least of their worries :p

Well that would explain the ticket.
You didn't tell us the ID number was still on the roof. I am surprised that they would sell it that way though, usually all special equipment and ID markings are removed before selling.

ya but there is no way the police officer saw that. And she specifically said, direct quote, "you can't have a black car with white doors"

Well then I gotta look out for dyslexic cops :p
BUT getting off topic. PO had rooflights that left quarter size holes and it looks like some kind of silicone in there now. Has held up fine
