See this proves it. Every time someone wants to change their 360 to a 6 cylinder a few of us say don't do it but some people that have the 6 say it's not bad.
Those performance figures are awful. I know for a fact that my 360 Grand, even with 2:73's would smoke that Cherokee. 0-60 in 18.4 seconds and the quarter in 21.4 at 63.5mph! I'm sure I could get to 60 in less than 12 seconds and the quarter in less than 18 seconds.

I bet you couldn't beat a Cherokee with a 6 banger in a race from Mesa to Atlanta...when you factor in the fuel stops :D

My J10 has been getting 16mpg in my daily drive to work and back. I go up 2000ft in elevation to work, so there is a lot of hills to say the least hehe. With a stick the 258's arentbad, with a automatic they are gutless pigs. Although i HATE the 2.73's in my J10, just despise them.

What? I dont get this:
why do they have a chart with such different rigs?? These comparisons are not "apples to apples" C'mon a 4 cyl subaru to a 360 wag. Geez there must be a 2500lb difference. I guess I just dont understand........ Tony

the chevy pick up is the closest comparison.
it was the 70's go figure???
You see strange comparo's in alot of those old C&D tests.
I don't think they understood the market segments as well as they do now...

There was a huge C&D writeup back in 79 compairing a fully loaded wag to a subaru wagon. It was an odd comparision, they test drove em and all that.

Here's something weird. If you read the "options as tested", the test vehicle has an I-6 and "Quadra-Trac transmission". That is one rare rig. My understanding was that Quadratrac came only with V-8's. I guess they didn't have proof readers back then. I also noticed it has Cherokee "S" package, but the wheels are listed as 15x6 and they should be 15 x7. Not that any of this matters. I may just have been into FSJ's for to long and it just sticks out.

The article is correct. If it came with an AT in 74-79 it had a QT regardless of V8 or I6. Only in 73 could you still get a TH400/D20 instead of the TH400/QT combo. Granted it is fairly rare because there just weren't very many 258's sold with an AT from 74-79 but if they did they had the QT behind it.

Thank You, I will consider my self educated. I had just never seen that before. It looks like they picked the worst possible drivetrain to test against anything. I-6 and all wheel drive seems kinda anti-economy, and anti-powerful on the drag strip. Still, a very cool article!

They used a very uncommon equipped Cherokee in an age where mpg's were on everyones mind. A better choice would have been a Cherokee with the 258/T18 combo that came standard with 4.09 axle gears. Performance would have be up, mpgs not down much and after the tests were over could'a dragged both the Subaru and Chev all over the test track. smile.gif
