I'm always for saving rigs that have the potential to be restored to drivers. I am not sure they will sell the jeeps though due to regulations imposed on them. To this day I am still steamed about a '77 wagoneer I wanted to buy from a yard. It had an absolutely pristine body without any scratches or rust. I have seen NOS bodies that were in far worse condition. The wag had been stripped almost to just the body and frame. I offered to pay for the body and frame separately as well as any remaining miscellaneous parts and just haul it out on a trailer. The yard would not budge on this. They said I had to pull the body off the frame and buy them separately and I just did not have the time. I offered $500 just for them to hold it two weeks until I could come back with the tools and a trailer to get the body but they refused. I returned a week later and the idiots had filled it with scrap and lifted it with a forklift through the open windows ruining the body. I told the yard manager he lost a lot of money on that one but he didn't care as they were all about rapid turnover. At one point this yard had 18 good FSJ's to get parts from but then when steel prices went up they all got crushed. Hope you have better luck.
The sad thing is, that's how a lot of junk yards are. They only care about quick money. I've seen hundreds of cars that were just plain cool as hell, and plenty that I needed for parts :( I have a dream of starting a private junk yard, basically just cars I like, to keep them from being crushed. Maybe someday. But if you have the cash to buy a car from a yard, a place to store it, and family and neighbors that won't whine constantly, I'd grab it. Cuz sure as you don't, it's a soup can.
