got my 88 gw home from north carolina sunday morning. thanks for the helpful tips and prayers from all who responded to my original posting.
it was an adventure, ending in the only time in my life that i ran out of gas (despite carrying a spare gas can).
i had a new carb installed before attempting the trip. didn't have time to test drive the gw before leaving nc. it ran pretty good for 600 miles then began to stall at red lights and loose throttle response. had to rev the engine with brakes applied whilr stopped to keep engine from stalling. then after releasing brakes the engine would not repond to acceleration. is this just a carb tuning problem?? does the idle need to be higher?? it starts rough then sometimes idles ok in park. when put in drive the engine wants to stall. all wires, plugs, timing, etc were new when the trip began. any ideas would be appreciated. carbs can be tricky and this one was never really tuned.

You may have a CTO gone bad.

CTO is a coolant temp override(swaps manifold to ported vac at spec temp)

and wouldnt you prefer active help to idle help?

possibilitys as far as i can see are

1. the jeep wants to be less than 600 miles form its old home

2. the carb tuning choke lean or rich mixture

3. you failed to get it muddy the whole way home

4. you got it muddy on the way home

5. it's a jeep thing!

hope it turns out to be simple

Check to be sure the carb bolts are tight. You may have vacuum leaks from the new carb install and bolts not down tight.
Hope this helps.
