View Full Version : Seat ideas?
Hi guys!
I'm looking to swap out my front seats, and not spend a fortune doing it.
The seats in my 77 Cherokee are nice, no rips etc but they arent the most comfortable things, and the no reclining thing is a pain. So I thought I would ask those of you that have done the swap what did you use and was it worth it? I was thinking about the buckets and console out of an explorer, cup holders would be nice..

there are several posts on here for Explorer seat swaps...I seem to remember someone swapping in xTerra seats?
I'm going to be hunting for some leather seats out of a new model grand cherk for my cherk project later this summer...
Mid 90's S10 Blazer seats here.
Reasonably comfy, easy to find, mod's needed to the base to get them to mount correctly.
Sure beats the heck out of the 85 GW seats I used for a few years.

Pull a part. $20 for any bucket seat. Got leather from a dodge caravan.

I bought two Smittybuilt seats this past weekend at a parts swap. They don't match and I know I will have to fab a bracket for them to mount, but they are brand new and fully recline. I plan on putting the G.E.A.R. seat covers on them to cover up the fact that they don't match. One is black vinyl and the other is black denim. The seat covers are going to cost me more than the seats did.

I wrestled with this problem seems like almost all winter and I'm only halfway done. I wanted to keep the stock power seat rails from my '91 GW and wanted to avoid drilling new holes in the floor. The wife was insisting on a seat that would recline and provide some lumbar support, preferably leather. Most of the seats I tried to make fit ended up sitting too high off the floor when they were mounted to the stock power rails. I tried a couple different junk yard seats from various dodge and ford minivans and a set of nice seats out of an '04 model Grand Cherokee. All of them were too high.
I ended up getting a pair of nice black leather seats from an '03 Land Rover LR3. (There's a pair up for sale now on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390157871800&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT). I had to disassemble most of the LR3 seat base and then fabbed up some new brackets using angle iron from the local hardware store. But the passenger seat is now installed and works well. If you're interested I could take some pictures and maybe do a short write up when I get around to doing the driver's side. Good luck.

I found the LR3 (sometimes called the Freelander) seats to be mighty comfy, btw. More importantly, so does the wife, who no longer complains about our two hour drive in the Waggy every Friday night!
I have a pull and pay nearby, I can take a walk and see what they have, I need to pull a taurus fan anyway.
Fury5, Pics would be sweet. I've got all the tools I need to build/mod just about any bracket. I was thinking of a drop back plate made of quarter inch flat stock, bolting into the existing holes with new studs for the seat.
That way if I change my mind I can unbolt it and fiddle with it.

Explorer seats are very comfortable..have crappy handles though for the reclining, break easy.

I'll just pretend that you all didn't insult the original GW seats. I wouldn't trade mine out for the world. If you need to "recline" thats why the back seat folds up. ;) Dont forget the blinket

It's pretty easy if you have any fab skills to make the front seats work out of a whole bunch of vehicles...cars, trucks, SUV's, etc...what I'm going to try to do is swap out both the front buckets AND the rear bench from the same vehicle into the cherk...this will probably prove a little trickier...I'm still hoping for a new model chebby blazer or an exploder with good leather front and rear at the local pick n pull...
