Ok guys, on the 83 vac d44 up front, I took the new pinion down to have the bearing pressed on before I opened up the diff. The 83 manual shows a slinger between the bearing and the pinion gear, no such thing supplied by Randy's R&P on the 3.73 gear set they sent. Question is this, do I need this slinger?
Is it really supposed to be there? None of the other ones I've opened had one. I really hate pulling pinion bearings LOL.
Thanks in advance.

The oil slinger has to be removed from the old pinion shaft and put on the new one...sorry

new bearing generally need an extra shim or a whining when stepping on gas sound can be heard, have to measure to be sure but more often than not in my experience more shim needed

Oracle, good to see you around again. Haven't seen you on here in a while. Need to get that avatar fixed. It scares the hell out of me (lol), but its original! BTW, ditto what RB said on the slinger shim.

yep,you will need it. if its not there, the pinion bearing could be pushed down enuff to affect setting the preload. the used and somewhat ragged 3.73s i just installed in my front end were missing the slinger, and as a result,i have NO preload shims present, and prolly not enuff pinion preload. it wasnt worth fixing, cause the gearset is marginal. ive allready found another good 3.73 gearset ill install and set up right as soon as i determine wich diff i want to keep :D (lincoln locker or tru trac)

The new bearing kit should come with a new oil slinger. Mine did anyway. Only my front diff had the slinger in it.

I see the slinger in 4 out of 5 axles.
it's usually about 0.100"
fyi, keep the backlash tight of you're putting in an automatic locker.

My 88 GW had slinger on both D44 pinions when I changed the gears.
