Bought a procomp HEI on ebay, from Procompoverstock. Mostly because they are very close so I received it the day after I ordered.

Anyways, it appears someone else already tried this distibutor. Removed the new gear, tried their old gear, realized it wouldn't fit, put the gear back and sent it back.

I just wanted the simplicity of the HEI. I already know the duraspark can be better. I've removed all the other stuff from the fenderwells and thought it would be nice to be rid of the rest of the stuff.

Is it because I'm going from prestolite to HEI? Should the Duraspark gear swap with the Prestolite gear?

How much? I was poking through the jegs website and found a couple drop in HEI setups for AMC mills. unless I'm misunderstanding you, the one you got off ebay was wrong? Or Damaged?

Here's a link to the one I'm lookin at.

and another one for comparison

Hope that helps..

It's the right distributor, just the wrong diameter shaft to use the stock distributor gear. The hear appears a bit beefier than stock, but it could be because the stock gear is worn. I'll have to measure with some calipers. I just ordered another one from a different ebay seller. I confirmed with him that the gears are swappable and the shaft is the same diameter as stock AND that it's new stock that hasn't been sitting around for years.

I have a feeling the procomp distributor I got was one of the first generation ones. I read about all kinds of problems with fitment on those. The seller just emailed me and is trying to not take it back because I removed the gear. Stupid me for being honest. The box is still here, I was going to drop it off tomorrow. The wires it came with are nice. Might have a somewhat expensive paperweight and bunch of spare parts :( I know if it gets sent back some other unsuspecting AMC'er will buy it and might not check and ruin a cam gear or worse.

BTW, the one I just ordered looks identical to the Jegs branded one.

Procomp Electronics is nothing but a warehouse in Cali that sells Chinese JUNK. They are riding on Pro Comp Suspension's name to lure people in. I actually called the real Pro Comp and they had no idea, talked to the VP on the phone. Guess nothing changed in 2 years. Some people have had luck with that distributer...I think it's insane to to use something so poorly made in the heart of your AMC engine.

Yep, I guess you're right. I'll have to look for some good chinese junk instead of some cheap chinese junk. The pro-comp unit is actually well made, looks as good as the MSD distributor in my ford hot rod, which is probably made in the same factory. The machine work is good. It's too bad someone didn't send them an actual AMC distributor to measure before they made 100,000 of them.

Also, the other 2nd one I ordered is not branded pro-comp. Based on the pictures it looks different.

Interesting about the procomp name issue.

As far as the jegs one. I've used one in my 455 pontiac for 2 years now. No issues. Not an AMC application but I've had luck with the brand.

We don't carry junk, we carry 2 HEI's, BOTH made in the USA:

We have had GREAT luck with both.

If you are working on a budget, try the Skip White HEI. They are good people to work with. I love the Mallory's but they are really not in my budget since I have so many other things I am trying to do on this truck at the same time.

Ironically, Mallory is now owned by Prestolite.

The Mallory I can believe is probably made in the USA. The proform is NOT.

Mallory really should have a statement on their website that says MADE IN USA if it's true. Right up front. Lot's of ambigous statements, probably because it's hard to keep track of what is made here and what isn't.

The prestolite gear does fit on the mallory dizzy. Then all that needs to be done is to have the shaft drilled for the roll pin, since mallory doesnt include a gear.
