Does anyone here buy the special collector vehicle insurance for their FSJ? I mean the companies that specialize in show vehicles like Hagerty or Grundy. I asked Grundy for a quote on my 78 Cherokee and they told me they might insure a CJ but not an SJ!

Might ask your regular agent, we have our 1937 Chevy insured through State Farm for replacement cost as a "special interest" vehicle. No mileage limitations either.

Ditto L8. My regular insurance will cover our 67 charger as a special interest or classic car. And you really don't need classic car coverage unless your rig is a show beauty queen. I just keep liability on all of our SJs.

plain old liability insurance here...I did look into the 'collector/antique' license plates, but here in IL (which has some of the stupidest rules ANYWHERE) you can ONLY drive a vehicle plated like that in and to and from parades and/or events.

Same in California. It has to be at least undergoing restoration and is only able to drive to events/parades, shows, etc. My 82 Qualifies, but it's going to be a d/d.

Any place that insures like that is not going to let you use it. Grundy is the best for collector cars and street rods because they don't have mileage limitations. You can drive as many miles as you want as long as you are going to a show or something like that. I just carry regular old liability on all of mine. About $250 per year each.

I have antique license plates on mine, those are basiclly the rules here in PA also. A state trooper once told me to carry a screwdriver on the seat with me so I could tell them if I got pulled that I was adjusting the carb and they wouldn't hassle me. They generally won't mess with you as long they don't notice it as being driven daily.
I'm looking into Hagerty...they want pictures of everything and lots of them to apraise it.

I used American Collectors Insurance. I am in NJ I was limited to 5000 miles per year, and I gave them a bunch of pictures and gave them the replacement value $3500 (I made that number up) They did not require an appraisal it. I did not need collector/historic plates for the car, and the rate for comp/coll/liab was like $85/year. I never had a claim and the service was very good.

Mine is on my regular insurance, I can put more than liability on it with a value estimate from a dealer or body shop.
Collector plates in WI let you dive it all you want - in the summer, you can not drive during "salt season" - lame

That' who I use for the Junkyard Dog. Easy to deal with and cheap. $80.00/year for liability. Haven't had a claim so not sure how they do on that end. My regular insurance company covers the 1991 GW.

Well, most people that truely veiw their vehicle as a colletable won't drive durring salt season anyways. My 86GW has never seen salt.
I also have my GW on my regular insurance, though I have been alittle concerned on what they may consider "fair market" value.

Bill,
Just remember they may not cover you when you go bashing though the Pine Barrens as we are not supposed to go "off road". BTW The Junkyard Dog is a great ride!

My 73 is covered through AAA, But as previously stated, I worry what fair market would be. I guess I can't complain for $58/year for full coverage. Yep, I sprang the extra $8 for full coverage instead of liability. No pictures so of course its in freshly restored condition if it gets stolen.

I have not looked into it yet, but I think I would demand an Actual Cash Value FIXED policy. Hagerty is what a friend told me to look into recently. It seems to me that an insurance company would run to insure a rig a guy/gal has poured hundreds of hours into...

Most insurance companies have a "declared value" policy. Each company has their own rules, but you can usually work out something that works for you. I would try whatever company you're with now, and see what their rules are. My brother's Chrysler 300 has a $25,000 declared value policy on it, and it's not that expensive. I think he pays about $40 a month extra on top of his daily driver's insurance. The vehicle is listed as pleasure use only, and has a max of 7500 miles a year.

I got a quote online from hagerty's, but it was cheaper just to add it onto our policy. Actually, it costs less per year with the wagoneer on our policy than off. I guess the thinking is if I'm driving this old bucket I'm not driving a new car with significant value. Liability only right now. Things will change once some work is done and paint is applied.

My coverage is thru Titan and I pay 588 a year for bare/basic coverage on a 86 waggy and I never had an accident and the only ticket I got was in 77 for doing 55 over (don't ask) and I'm over 50!

You forgot the magic phrase in that law... "on the way to the shop"...
Back when... I used these plates and cruised around. I only ever got stopped by the police once, and I told the cop.. its a 1962 Chevy.. of course I am on the way to a repair shop. He laughed and let me go.
I'm covered with Farm Bureau as a regular vehicle, liability and comprehensive; no restrictions as to mileage or value.

I have mine on my regular insurance, none of them I would call collector grade, and they will pay 3500.00 if totaled.58.00 per year each 100,000.00 300,000.00 liability and under insured motorist coverage. We need that here in SoCal. in case an uninsured illegal smashes into you and has to go to the hospital. Ask me how I know.
