Well my dream is being realized. After having the J10 with a Cummins 4B, I ran across several M715s scattered across the southest I couldnt pass up. This is the first vehicle I have ever lusted over haha.
Its time to build my dream truck.

Looks like you're singlehandedly going to jumpstart the economy! I guess you'll be recieving lots of Christmas cards this year.
Looks great so far but why did you inboard the rear springs to inside the frame and not under it?

It feels like I have done my part to stimulate the economy haha. I inboarded to the springs for better articulation (thats my hunch) but mainly to keep down on lift. The 715s will clear a 38 inch tire stock. If I inlined the springs with a spring over, it would be huge and be large enough for a 46 or 49 I imagine). Spring over is the only option for what I want. Spring unders have their place, just not for this build.
Cant have the springs digging in the dirt when I show up at the tractor pulls either!!!

Are you going to rust proof the frame? You have only to remove the cab and take it for a galvi dip before paint and under coat. Or are you waiting to finish fabbing motor , tranfer case, and spring perches. At any rate have fun.

Whoah...nice job.
What did the 14b come out of? What do you think you have into it to convert to disc? Would it still be wide enough with outboard springs? Check my build link and you'll see why I ask. TIA!
tndonor
04-26-2010, 01:05 PM
I will be taking the cab off when all the mounts and crossmembers are complete. It will be getting a rust treatment/barrier applied. Kinda silly not to when its down that far. Only four bolts from the cab comming off.

Are you using the ht3b as your only turbo or doing a twin turbo setup? Just looked into the ht3b and people are saying it takes a lot of fuel to get it spinning if it is your only one
tndonor
04-26-2010, 01:08 PM
Gambler,
From what I recall, you must use a van width 14bolt to use outbaord springs. There are rare as far as 14 bolts go. Even still, the space between drum and spring is close.
The 14 bolt is from a CUCV. the disc brake brackets are about 50 bucks from several people. Rotors and hardware are another 150 or so new (or at least for me at NAPA).

HT3B is the large turbo in the compound setup (commonly are somewhat incorrectly referred to as twins). The stock hx35 and HT3B will work together. It has the 26cm housing. It would be very difficult to spool as a single. It would take lots of fuel and lots of RPMs to acheive that. Theses turbos come off of big rigs for reference.
Twins, one turbo for each bank
Compounds, small turbo exhaust fed into larger turbo, large turbo compressed air fed into small turbo, small turbo connected to intercooler/motor.

Oh ok I see, I missed that. Since the small turbo is feeding the large, will it still take a while to spool both up? Whats the advantage of compound turbos vs twin?
Sorry for flooding your thread with ?s

Looks like a really cool project. I like your plate/sleeve spring hanger idea -- I used the same method to drill holes through the frame of my YJ and it made life a lot easier.
It will be neat to follow this thread. You're building what a modern M715 should be. :)
jMedia, compound turbocharger setups are popular on diesel engines because you're usually working with a single bank of cylinders (inline configuration), making twin turbos inappropriate. Compound turbos allow you to produce much higher intake pressure than a single turbo -- the turbo sizes are matched to their respective operating ranges. The smaller turbo spools up faster, so it receives exhaust pressure first. However, since it's a smaller unit, it can generate a greater pressure (compared to the larger turbo) and is second to receive the intake pressure -- the larger turbo pressurizes the ambient air before it's pressurized again by the smaller turbo.
The operation is very similar to a dual-stage air compressor. A larger primary piston feeds a smaller secondary piston, creating a greater output pressure than a single piston by itself.

Put a fitting in your turbo air piping from turbo to manifold to a check valve and into a tank and you have low pressure on board air.

While a novel idea, it will not work for an OBA setup. Exhaust tempteratures are up to 1300 degrees and when that cools (in a tank) the psi will drop as the air cools.
I need the psi and seperate system to inflate tires and run air tools, etc

I think he's talking about the air side. Although you probably won't be going much over 30-40psi, and I'm not sure how useful such low pressure would be.

Thanks for the nods
ARP studs for the steering arms are in. LED turn signals for the front (the stock 715 are slits at best, want oncomming traffic to know my intentions because I would roll right over them without much trouble haha) Safety and the safety of others is paramount.
About to send J10 steering box off for a rebuild (unless someone can chime in and say its not difficult). I am going to use a hydraulic pump from a Cummins to push about 12-15 gallons per minute at 1750 psi....that should steer things ok. Debating on a hydraulic winch since I have the capacity.
Line locks are in for trail parking.
Pondering over using cable shifters for the doubler or having three sticks....There are going to be all kinds of levers in the cab nv4500 shifter, OX locker, 3 for the doubler haha.

Everyone says how tight the 6B is in a Jeep. Well I dont think this applies to the 715 at least. Mockup gave 2 inches from the rear of the engine block to the fire wall. Once the original radiator supports are cut, I have 10 inches, minus 2.5 for the electric fan for the radiator and intercooler, that was about the same in the 95 ram I pulled this from!

The truck is off of 640. I would love to meet some of the fellow FSJers here but I cant get the truck out until the drivetrain swap is done. My friend and I are doing the build and he is looking at Cummins conversion swap kits for us Jeep nuts.
He has had his mounts and stuff ripped off by some big and respected 4x4 companies so out of respect for his business and paycheck, I will not have the truck out until it is roadworthy. He is a good friend of mine and want ot protect him....not that this is a bad crowd but he has been burned too many times and I wont jeopardize what he does or make him feel uncomfortable.
When its done....we can have a drool fest and swap stories, go for trail rides, talk Cummins conversions (I have had a 4B swap in a J10 as well) to our hearts content.
Thanks to all who have followed this build with excitiment. I am doing this as it is my dream build but it helps to be appreciated by everyone else here!
Ill update as much as I can. Hopefully Summer will be filled with black smoke dreams with the locals. I do travel quite a bit to Nashville, Memphis, Birminham AL, and Lake Keowee SC, Cincinatti, OH. If anyone is along the way, Im always game for talking shop to break the trips up!

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k146/tndonor/outkdp.jpg
The small dowel next to the bolt alignes to block and houing during assembly. These steel pins can walk out and drop in the geartrain causing the cam to break, ruin the injection pump, and all kinds of wonderful damage. Had I kept the motor in the Dodge much longer, I wouldnt have a motor. So I took a punch, drove it back in. You fix these by removing the bolt next to it, and placing a tab which is secured by the bolt and covers the hole. $3 part that can save $$$$$$$. This dowel was more than halfway out!

You guys with Cummins powered J Trucks are killing me!
Excellent project.
How do you compare the M-715 engine bay to the civilian engine bay?
They look very similar to me.
Are you planning to run an intercooler?
If so, do you think there will any space issue with 6BT and the intercooler in the engine bay.
Zach from ZMJeeps has a sweet setup with his 4BT powered J20, but his 4BT leaves rooms in the front of the engine for a fan.
Are you having Scott from Tennessee Diesel Conversions assist with this project?
I've spoken with him via PM over on the 4BTSwaps forum and seems to be a super nice fellow.

Im not sure what it is about the engine bay in the M series versus the civy J trucks. I havent put a tape to both but it looks like the fender wells are wider and the firewall to front valance in a bit longer.
I will be intercooling..... a must with twin turbos lol. It will go in the front valance and Ill cut two holes in the back side for the cooler inlet and outlet to stick out of.
Yes Scott from TN Diesel is on it with me, or I should say Im with Scott. We are looking at some FSJ conversion parts, not sure how that will pan out. Scott is a great guy. Super knowledgable about these B series motors and conversions in general.

that is going to be the sweetest of jaw droppers, looks like you just caught that dowel pin, those heavy p7100 pumps really like to come loose, and wiggle, your probably considering the studs to accomodate the oring, an upper stage fuel plate would be easy to install at this point, shove it all the way forward for max fuel, governor spring for longer fueling thru rpm band, the larger intake horn from a third gen really ups the breathing and spool up, im running cooler tubz, what a difference, with 3" pipes, theres a lot of compound setups on 1st gen d.t.r. alot of induction views, youve probably checked, keep this thread rockin! by far one of my favorites, good work!

that is going to be the sweetest of jaw droppers, looks like you just caught that dowel pin, those heavy p7100 pumps really like to come loose, and wiggle, your probably considering the studs to accomodate the oring, an upper stage fuel plate would be easy to install at this point, shove it all the way forward for max fuel, governor spring for longer fueling thru rpm band, the larger intake horn from a third gen really ups the breathing and spool up, im running cooler tubz, what a difference, with 3" pipes, theres a lot of compound setups on 1st gen d.t.r. alot of induction views, youve probably checked, keep this thread rockin! by far one of my favorites, good work!
The dowel pin is for the timing housing. The p7100 is heavy, but its not attached to the pin. The pin aligns the housing ot the block on the assembly line.
Another place that needs inspecting anytime one of the Cummin B series motors is out are the camshaft retaining bolts. If they ever walk, they usually break in two. Mine were good but a little locktite never hurts

I wont say how much but most get the idea when you get a built Cummins and compound turbos, new trans, doubler, and built axles. Oddly enough, its the odd ball small parts that end up costing more or at least more than one would think

I went for the 14 bolt for strength and aftermarket support. The 14B is stronger than a 60, locker is sheaper, cheaper to disc brake, etc. Plus I can go to the pull a part and for $20 buy shafts should I break them.
Most Dana 70 fronts were closed knuckle. I upgraded the 30 spline stub shafts to 35 spline stub (just like a 70). If I start going through front shafts, then it will be D60 cv axles.
Like anything, it is how you drive and treat it. If I drop the clutch at WOT on a rock, then yes, nothing will hold 1200 ft tq.

Got the winch CHEAP. Everything works and it was big enough I couldnt pass it up. Also got the intercooler fitted and mocked up. It wont be hard mounted until the motor is in as a new intake must be fabbed and the second turbo isnt in its final resting place. There is some adjustability with mounting it so until everything is ready, it makes no sense to possibly have to redo it later. Yes its a tease, nobody has really shown how to put a good intercooler in these trucks.
Also got a tilt column for the truck and intermediate steering shaft. On the near future to do list is remount the power steering gear box. Paint the motor. Assemble the motor. Start building the hotpipe for the compound turbos.

Thats the idea. What intercooler is that? Where are your inlet and outlet tanks positioned on that?
Ill be using a Ford 7.3 (all aluminum...not plastic end tanks). That coolers tanks are 34ish inches outside to outside. Frame rails are about 29 inside to inside. It was interesting.
There used to be more opposition from the purists about cutting anything. Guess they figure its better for someone to love it and make it their own than to be scrapped.

Just like THE PIG SMITH said that beautiful creation is Zack's handi-work on his Project Humpty. IIRC the intercooler is all aluminum, no plastic, with the tanks being on the sides with the inlet and outlet being on the top corners where you see the blue hoses. The intercooler Zack chose fits in the front of the radiator and IIRC he didnt have to cut the opening at all and only made some custom brackets to mount it. Its an ingenious use of an existing intercooler and the routing is great. I didnt like the other options I had seen for mounting and hadnt made up my mind fully to switch to the smokey side but it was one of the big helpers in pushing me over the edge.

For the radiator, Ill be using a Summit or Jegs generic that is about 27 inches long. The Cummins motors dont run hot. When I had the small 22 inch Summit radiator in my 4b, water temp was 160 while driving.
The radiator support will be cut back and centerd in the truck.
Anyone know why the M715 radiaotr support is not centered in the truck and why the passenger side fender is larger?

The truck originally came with a 4.6L V8 gasser.
The gasser radiator is way to large for the 4BT.
In the winter, he keeps a piece of cardboard over the front radiator to help get water temps up to provide some heat in the cab.

I'm using the stock jeep radiator which has worked fine for 3 years, two of those i never even had a fan. the radiator is in stock location and the engine is within 3/4" of an inch away from the firewall. there is less than 3 inches between the radiator and the pulleys. I was able to offset a 16" low profile electric fan.

I have 2 inches between the rear of the block and the firewall. Ill have 4 inched from tehelectric fan (taurus 2 speed) to the radiator. The fan will be on a toggle like my last one. I only had to turn it on when playing in the mud (high RPMs and little airflow). Also nice to turn the fan off in water crossings.

the problem is he is running a 4 cyl lots of extra room. I dont know if the fire wall is different between a m715 and a j-truck to allow the engine to sit further back.
I am using the factory jeep radiator in the stock location and the engine is within 3 inches of the radiator and its less than 3/4" of from the fire wall.

Intercoolers should always be infront of a radiator. If it sat behind the radiator, the airflow would be drastically reduced as well as heated up from the coolant temp.

not sure where the confusing came from about intercoolers behind the radiator???????
I understand that Zack got his to fit as well as your old truck. but If i'm not mistaken were the radiators in the factory jeep position? The 4cyl cummins allows for alot more room for changing the locations of such items. I just trying to figure out whats different to be able to fit the larger 6 cyl engine and have both the radiator and intercooler behind the grille support with out having to cut it or modify the firewall to allow the engine to sit further back.
I was just comparing my truck and motor swap to see if something was different as in the shape of the firewall or radiator support as my truck there isnt that much room.

I think he got confused with my babbling and thought I was talking about the cooler going behind the rad.
As for Zack's intercooler, yes, the radiator is in the stock position with the intercooler in front of it and behind the grill.
I forget exactly who it is, but when I find out I'll post a link, but there is a guy on here that has both a 3.9 and 5.9 Cummins who supposedly didnt have to cut the firewall. IIRC both of them were right up to the firewall and there was enough room. I'll try to get clarity from him and post up what I find out.

im using the dodger intercooler and it fits behind the final type waggy grille. it would probably also fit behind a razor, but i had to cut the grille support to fit it so i will not be able to ever run a Rhino grille if i ever stumble across one. thats what i was wondering as to an intercooler fitting between the stock radiator and the grille support. (not just the grille)
I guess their intercooler size is roughly the same dimensions as the radiator in order to fit. the dodge units are wider than the radiator supports. Thats why i had to cut into my grille support toward the faux vent holes. not sure the benefits of using a larger intercooler compare to the coolness factor of being able to run the rhino grille.
Sorry to hijack your build thread..

Its been some time since I have been under the hood so I need to get out and see first hand what it takes to alter the opening. I hadn't made up my mind between a rzor and a rhino grill. It'll also depend on finding out what the final clearances are between a 3.9 and a 5.9 under the hood. We already know a rad and cooler will fit behind a razor with a 3.9. IIRC they could be moved back to accomodate a rhino with a 3.9, but I'd like to know what optins are there for the 5.9

Well today was a good day. Motor started going back together. Head got thrown in the head rotissarie my friend built and the new 60lb valve springs. The 60 lb dprings are a must for turning the motor over 3000 rpms. They keep the valves and pistons from kissing one another.

Next was changing the rack plug. This allows the internals of the pump more travel for more fuel over a wider range. This plug can only be accessed (without grinding the timing housing......dont know why some do that) is to take the pump off or loosen it enough to get the plug out.

Next was to advance the timing. Stock timing was set at 12.5 gedrees BTDC, it was advanced to 17 degrees BTDC. This is done with a dial caliper in an adapter into thenumber 1 injection pump plunger, measuring the pump cam eccentric, measureing engine TDC, advnacing the pump timing, removing pump gear, rolling motor back to TDC and reinstalling gear. Whew
Not many pics as this wasnt a picture friendly part but here is proof at least I guess.

Now for those who are paying attention to the details, the motor is not centered on the valve cover bolts, it is centered off of the crankshaft

Got the atmospheric turbo (larger turbo in a compound setup) figured out. Hotpipe material is 90 percent in, just waiting on a few odd pieces to get here and a custom hx35 backing plate and the exhaust can be run.
The exhaust is key as it will determine where the transfer case and transmission crossmembers can be run.

Got the hydraulic assist in and figured out. Ram is a 1.5x8. The stock steering pump puts out 4.5 gpm, what a modified conventional unit roughly puts out. Going to use a remote resevoir that will increase the capacity another 3 quarts to help with cooling.

Reading builds like these make me realize just how empty my pockets.
I think somebody already asked, and you may have already answered, but are those MRAP seats available online somewhere? Or did you just have a lucky find?

Time for a few updates....
Got the transmission and transfercases cradle figured out. This is the base of the structure. The hoop goes over the NV4500. It will have two 90 degree bends with break points that go the front of the hoop. The middle will have a plate to cathc the NV4500 mount. I have a smaller hoop for the rear which will catch the NP205. I know thats a lot to visualize but thats what it is.
Slight learning curve with a new tube bender haha.

This is just sitting on its own weight so the angles and such are off. The rear hemi loop id what will catch the NP205. One side is lower to accomodate the clutch slave cyl.

I had bought a mojave heater for the truck sometime ago. I didnt like how I would have to have mounted it with the limited outlets and options it gave me. I ordered a unit made by Danhard. In addition to the four front outlets, the defrost outlets (2) are on top which is perfect. I picked up some NOS defrost ducts for the truck. This heater allows you to completey isolated the unit from the coolant so you the unit itself will not be hot when I dont want it to be......summer etc.

Currently the truck is getting the seat mounting and in cab configurations done. I have a panel from 12v guy ordered to include incab which controls front and rear, keyed ignition, 7 toggles with circuit breakers, and battery isolation monitoring/control.
All guages for the dash are ready to the interior when it goes together (speedo, oil, water, boost, pyro, volt)
Will be building a center console to house the electrics. Once this is a bit further, the cage will be bent and seats mounted.

I will have some updates soon. I cant catch a break it seems. After my father passed, I had a storm knock some 60-80 foot trees that crushed my car and ripped the power lines out of the hosue. 4 days after the storm, a tornado hit the house..... tree came through the bedroom wall while I was in bed. Missed my head by 19 inches.
Currently the rollcage is being finished. Main hoops are done, just taking the time to look at seat integration and console /wiring options. Havebought several goodies too Ill post up soon.

Wow, after all that has happended to you, I don't think anybody could blame you if you had to abandonon the project for a while. But you must be a true FSJ'er. Good luck with your house and I hope your family is doing ok.
I'll just stay tunned to see what goodies you have coming up.

Holy cow. Glad to hear you made it through. That's intense and a lot to take. It's nuts to think about how so much stuff goes on around us, all while going in and out of these builds that demand so much time and energy. Thanks for the update, and again, glad you're ok.

Update time. The roll cage is in (minus the head bars). Havent decided where I want to locate those yet. And its nice to still be able to stand up in the cab. Seat mounts are welded into the roll cage.

Here is the plan for the rear winch. I got a great deal on a Ramsey RE12000.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k146/tndonor/re12.jpg
It will go into a skid/mount under the bed. This is a piece of 1/4 plate put in a brake. The winch will go inside and be nice and protected.

The next little bit is getting the throttle cabel in, clutch rod in, PS hoses made and the wiring ran.

Looks great! It also reminds me that I need to start working on mine again. Hey watch out for those wiper motors, I bought some that look just like those the first time around and they lasted just long enough to get through an inspection.

Bulk upload time again.
I had a panel made by 12voltguy. It has my ignition, front and rear winch controls, battery controls, and of course switches for lights, etc. I had it done with circuit breakers instead of fuses.

Next was time to address the rockers. Aside from being metallic swiss cheese and housing a rodent and babies, they needed some love. So they got cut out. Had two pieces of 1/4" plate sheared and formed the rocker from that. They are welded to the frame with DOM and tied into the cage supports going to the frame in the front to prevent peeling. They will also act as sliders and be able to support the weight of the vehicle.
The outside of the rockers were capped with 22ga sheet. 1/4" flat stock was welded into the V to provide internal resistance to collapsing

This is where the Oasis compressor will live. I have some more venting to do. It already has the hole in the bottom for the power cables and air line to exit the cab underneath.

OX Locker cable is in and the location has been worked out.
Tomorrow is finish locating the steering wheel and mounting the floor plate seal/cover thingy around the column. Also mount the clutch master to the firewall.
I switched directions on the ps pump. I yanked the stock ps pump and put in a zf hydraulic pump. Went from 1 gpm to 4.5. Also went from metric ps box fittings to -6. Because of this I has to relocate the radiator up to accomodate the 90 degree fittings. All that is left is to make the ps hoses.
Hydroboost is mounted to the firewall ofor the final time. May get the hoses done tomorrow as well. Im not sure where I am going to put the ps cooler at. Space is becoming premium. I have an idea but wasnt the front bumper on before I commit to it.
Bought 5 gallons of gear oil to fill everything. Have 4.5 gallons of collant to put in. Ill stop there and hope I get this done this weekend.
