Hey everyone I am going to be installing a 700r4 into my wagon shortly. (Yes I am getting a built up version.) i have had too many bad experiences with the 727 and had mine rebuilt three times in my last wagon. The 700r4 will also give me overdirive which will help me a lot in this rig witht he gas mielage. (I hope) do any of you out there have any experience with this swap and if so what results did you get? did you get better mileage and also did the trans perform better than the 727 trans? did any of you have any problems with the 700r?

From what I've heard the 700R4 isn't too reliable and tend to blow up offroad. I do have one in my 84 Jimmy and first chance I get I want to get rid of it. The thing never shifted into 2nd until I adjusted the T.V. cable. Now it'll shift but the shifts are stiff.
I had a manual tranny swapped out for a 700r in an older pickup. I loved the tranny, got good mileage 15-18mpg and never had a problem with it for the two years I have it. Keep use informed and good luck. If my tranny goes I may put one in also.

Yeah I have heard about the early model 700r's warthog the early model ones are the ones that are plagued with problems. (they have the really small sprags I think. anyway I am getting a lte model one and am having it built up by jetperformance and transmissions. so it should be just fine. Maybe you might want to swap in a later model 700r4 as they worked out eh bugs that plagued the older model ones by 89 or so.

Wow, trouble with 727's, that's not very common. I've had nothing but good experiences with them, in cars and the Grand. I don't exactly what you want to put it in but the overdrive 700R4 would be good if you've got some lowers gears like 3.55 or lower but if you've got 2.72's an overdrive would suck, the low first gear would be nice though. I do know that many have had problems with the 700R4 however.

You could cruise at 150mph and only turn 3000RPM if you had a 700R4 and 2.72 gears!

Yeah the early one's sucked but the later were ok and many upgrades are now available...
I'll do this swap someday as that overdrive gear AND that awesome first ratio are just too nice to pass up......
Also, you must have the TV cable adjusted properly as that being wrong alone can smoke your new trans.....
Don't have any personal experience with any of these shops, but to show you what's out there in the way of heavy duty mods and hard parts here's some links of people who specialize in built 700r4's:

4WOR magazine built a rockkrawling extreme 700R4 with a special manual valve body/lockup converter that gives full compression braking with an automatic-here's the article:

They used these guys for the valve body:

Anyway I say go for it and let us know how it turns out...
