i talked to my local mechanic today and he approximated 6 hours to replace the rear main seal, this seemed a litle much to me, how long does it take for a mechanic to do this?

I did mine in less than two hours, that that was without the advantage of a lift. I would think that any mechanic worth his salt would be at least be able to match that. 6 hours is too much.

4 hours is fair.

I did mine in about 2-3 hours, also without a lift. After I got finished I found out that Pep Boys sells a (generic) rear seal intstallation kit that would have shortened the time. The FSJ service manual covers the repair pretty well. If he wants to charge you 6 hours you are getting hosed.

That's too much time for a pro equipped shop. You might talk to him again and mention that AMC's use a two piece seal. He may think it's a one piece seal where he'd have to pull the trans/x-case out.
