View Full Version : under-the-hood light won't go out
Where is the switch for the under-the-hood light on an '87 GW? I noticed a glow from under the hood tonight; I unplugged the light to revent the battery from being drained.
Maybe it's trying to be nice and let you know that it needs a little attention. tongue.gif I would consider yourself lucky, because usually they aren't as nice about it. :D

It is a sensor switch, in the light unit itself it senses when the hood opens. ;)

Most of these switches have a small amount of mercury in them. When you open the hood the mercury completes the electrical connection.
You can replace the switch or put your own in-line switch in.
Have you checked your refrigerator light in your kitchen? Ha Ha

It operates on level, when the hood is open, it is tilted up, and tuen on. You can fool around to get it straightened out.

It appears the underhood light on both my Jeeps are either defective or just don't use a mercury method of making contact.
I just keep them unplugged at the socket, search around, find the socket and plug it in when I need it, which really isn't that often.

You can try and adjust the light, replace the light itself,or( and willie isn't far off)get a normally closed momentary switch and mount it where inline with the light wire and the hood pushes the plunger down thus turns the light off.
