I have a slow leak from one hose on the heater core, the one going to the thermostat. Both hoses are a years old tops, the leak is right up at the core...is this a bad core? I took it out two years ago (winter) cleaned it out, ran water thrugh it, put it all back together, and still no heat...well it's good in the summer.

I had a similar problem. Turned out that I tightened the hose clamp too much and crimped the tube coming out of the core leading to a leak. You should be getting ample heat in your J-10. Is your flapper door working when you move the temp. selector? It may be too low a temperature thermostat. Or the housing the core is in may be completely plugged with leaves. Doubtful, if you had the core out 2 years ago.

Maybe it's 'cuz you shouldn't have a heater hose going to the thermostat housing.
One should go to the water pump and the other to the rear of the intake manifold.
It's a short "by-pass" hose that runs from the thermostat housing to the water pump.

He has a 258 I-6 which I believe has a different heater hose set up than the V8s.

OOPS.
I've owned 8 FSJs now, every one with a V8. I forget that some came with 2 cylinders missing!
