Hi all, Just found out from the land lord that the rent will go up by $25/month or I can pay for the snow plowing. Imagine my suprise when my wife said, (why don't you get a plow for your jeep, you would probably have fun!) It sounds like fun indeed and we are moving to Maine next year, so we will need something up there also. My question is can I make my dream rig and plow it to? It is currently getting painted, I built the guys wife a computer in trade for it. It is your regular 260/727 91 GWag with TFI upgrade. I have a Holley 4/bbl intake and edelbrock 1400 to go on after the body work. I need to to something about the springs and tires anyway before winter and this would be a great justification for the wife. Besides a plow frame can be modified into a brush guard right!! I was thinking about doing the Rusty 4" lift kit. I figure that should stiffen up the front enough for the plows extra weight. I am open to all suggestions, Is there a way to do this without blowing up my WAG.
Thanks

To hook a plow to that Jeep would ruin it, not that it could not do it!
I have a plow cherokee and my cousin has a wag, can you say rust! If you drive it down the road with the blade on it, the blade will suck the salt up off the road and fill every nook and crany in the Jeep!!!
That and a 4" lift will raise the mounting height up to high so the brackets for the blade would have to be lowered down like a truck and then what good did the lift do ya?
I will say a FSJ properly set up with a "heavy steel blade" can't be beat by any 1/2 ton truck when it comes to plowing, but it will ruin it.

At work our philosophy is to run 'heap of s__t' trucks for plowing, mechanically they're in excellent shape. But you wouldn't want to be seen in it smile.gif
It might be a little different doing your own driveway, but running commercial we see a lot of body damage (3am 2 drivers falling asleep, one in reverse, one at a standstill... CRUNCH, those darn light poles you cant see when backing up at mach speeds... Never mind the spinouts between jobs!)
Its not a good idea on a truck you care a good deal about... But I wouldn't do it to my baby smile.gif
That said, you can buy these new 'lighter' duty PVC units which would require almost no beefing of the front end to carry... Good for homeowner use smile.gif

Why don't you just put some nice snow tires on it - who needs to plow it :D ??
Of course what do I know - I live in L.A.

Kevin, ditto to the above. Since you mention dream rig(I'm assuming nice rig here) a plow is really tough on a rigs frame, suspension, trans, drive lines etc. Better to buy a beater truck for a plow rig.
I wouldn’t want to do that with a 229, I think you would be better off with a 208... as for a good plow where I work we used Western (http://www.westernplows.com/plows/pl_frame.htm) but I know you don’t want to ruin your springs with the weight of a 500+ lb plow so I think the best choice in that would be the SnoWay (http://www.snoway.com/pages/products/predator/index.html) plow
(Plus it looks cooler :D)
You will also want to get a load helper... western has a few: load support (http://www.westernplows.com/plows/accessories/load_support.html)
At work we have an 82(basically the same as mine) 360/727/219 problems have been the case (full time) that’s why I say 208 because it will save you a chain, and the 727 has held up pretty well, 360 still strong... the stock springs are holding as well.. Has about 1in sag in the front
Heres pics:Pic (http://www.virtue.nu/yazahx/821.jpg) also, no matter how cold it is it will run HOT on the hwy if you block the radiator(and on a stock paint job burn the paint off with no insulation)
(with a rig like yours i wouldnt plow that guys driveway... its too new looking and besides you would have to do some major mods)

If someone needs a plow for a Jeep, I have the whole setup here...need the pump rebuilt, tho :(. It's a Meyer.

Dang Meyers...had one of those years ago with a shot pump....just sold it to someone else when I didn't need it....kick myself now, but oh well. What you want for the whole setup? I've considered getting a plow for the Honcho, and would need one that bolts to a Jeep. I'm in WI, so not that far away....let me know!
On the issue of plows....I agree with most of the thread, that with the rig you have, it's probably not in your best interest. If you had an el cheapo work truck(most people call 'em beaters!), then it might be not be such a bad idea, but not on your nicer rigs! Also...if the drive is small enough, consider one of those small riding tractor snow blowers or something....those suffice in some areas! Just some ideas!
Rusty...let me know on that plow! Thanks

Ditto on the above replies. If you do decide to plow with it make sure and put on a auxillary tranny cooler. And when you get to the end of a push, make sure you come to a complete stop before you shift the transmission.
My plow truck: '75 Dodge 1/2 ton Powerwagon shortbox. Dana 60 rear, 8 lug Dana 44 front. 3/4 ton springs. 440, NP435, NP203 with milemarker part-time conversion. 33" BFG AT's. 7.5 Western Pro plow. headers, and a Edelbrock carb to be thrown atop the dung heap. Going to replace with either a Road Demon or Holley street avenger.

Plow rigs in Michigan are held together bye welding rod..
Sometimes there is more weld than rig...
No joke.. I have belly scars to prove it from the ole upside down gorrila welds,, that drip down into your shirt(and everywherre else).
Better to get a piece O junk and just make it mechanically sound and beat it....

my owners manual says that you are not to install a snow plow or damage to the suspension will result. Find an old junker to put a plow on.

They did but I think it changed with the edition of GW,(84) pre 84 I think it was ok because you had "heavy duty" stuff like the 208/bw/dana after 83 I think the new route was luxury and that being the reason for softer springs...(besides do you want to plow with a 228/229?)
Like the jeep I posted a pic of it was pre 84 making it less prone to spring problems...

Not too hard to find a JTruck to use as a beater up in Maine, and for cents on the dollar, too. Where you moving to?

Thanks for all the info. We are moving up to Bangor, next summer. I am going to check out a 69 Wag tomorrow with a 72 Buick 455 Stage one motor with a Turbo 400. I guess the body is shot, but what a drive train!!! ;)
