i was under the jeep today(new wheel cylinders project) and i noticed there are rear rubber mounts that are only connected to the body(bump stops?) that go in between the frame and the body after the wheel well , and they were loose as a goose...How do I tighten these? from the inside under the carpet...
does it matter if they are tight?
Then I was looking to hook up my 4wd light connector on the transfer case and I noticed the mount (only saw one on the drivers side)to the crossmember (rear of the case near the drive shaft) was not tight... I could spin both the upper and the lower rubber bushings with my hands...
Those are supposed to be tight aren't they? ...
They actiually looked like brand new...
I was going to tighten them ,but thought I'd verify first....
also My case [229] doesn't have one of those 4wd connecters on the case..it should, shouldn't it?  ..
anyways
Thanks for any input....

My 229 has an electrical connector at the rear bottom of it, too, and nothing's connected to it. Is that why my 4WD indicator light has never lit?
I don't even know where such a light would be, never having seen it.

The first loose mount sounds like a body mount and yes it should be tight. If one is loose them more are probably loose too.
The second mount you describe sounds like what I’ve always called a “transfer case snubber” (probably has a real name), goes between the t-case and the cross member and acts like a motor mount, it should be tight too.

thanks tadsal /....
I assumed they were supposed to be...
it's only attached to one of those the body cross members under the rear cargo area and not attched to the FRAME it self...like the rest of the mounts...
what exactly does that do...looks like a bumpstop for the body?..
seems odd they'd be loose...
But I was wondering about why my case does not have a connector for the 4wd light ...
a 1989 should have that ...PO must have swapped the case out or somethin'....
hey thanks again

Say, Kel. Did you by chance have your vehicle jacked up on one corner and in a pretty good bind? The mount really shouldn't be terribly loose, but the stress put on the body/frame in such a position could "possibly" pull one or more of the body mounts "ever-so-slightly" away from it's resting point.
(Boy, did I qualify the heck outta this one) tongue.gif

Actually,
That mount in the rear should be loose. Sorta. You wouldn't think so, but at least on my '79, there is no hole in the frame for a bolt. If you jack up the body to do a body lift, you can pull the mount right off the body. It is just held in with a rubber "nipple" that plugs into the body and I guess the force of the body keeps it in there. As for the second problem, it is a snubber for when the driveline twists under force. Don't let those mounts go to hell, they are important and if trashed can give you a really jerky-feeling driveline under load.

ok that makes sense
no I had the axle up on stands...
so if it's held by a nipple then...it was about a nipple loose[Ha!!]
no I think they're OK in the rear, I'll definately tighten up those XFER mounts, those need to be torqued to certain # or just "tighter than a...."
cool thanks guys...

Body mounts with no bolts, OK, wouldn't be the first strange thing seen on a Jeep.
I don't recall any specific torque for the snubber bushing, I would think that like most rubber bushings they should be tight/snug but not so much that it compresses the rubber all the way. When that happens the rubber can't provide any cushion.

every thing on a fsj should be tight
