I'm helping a friend put his AMC 304 back into his Jeep. We pulled it and tore it down then took it to a machine shop to have it rebuilt, when we got it back all we were supposed to do was put the carb and headers on and drop it into the Jeep. Well that didn't happen like it was supposed to, we got it back basically like a short block. We got everything bolted back on but have a couple questions about all the threaded holes in the Intake as well as the sides of the block. We got a box back from the shop with a bunch of plugs and fittings that we are not sure where they go, can anyone help??

There is a fine threaded hole on the passenger side of the intake just behind the carb bolt.

There is another hole which is course threaded right behind the passenger side thermmostat bolt.

There are also 2 holes on each side of the block one set in the front and the other set just behind the motor mounts. They don't look they go into anything but what are they for?

Also does the Temp. sending unit go into the intake on the driver side just next to the thermostat housing??

If we would have pulled all this stuff out it wouldn't have been so bad, but live and learn.

Thanks for any info.

Hi Masher,
I just broke down my 304 for the scrambler and will do my best to recall where stuff goes.

I think there are 2 holes here and they are probably for the plate that holds the fuel cable linkage. I'm not sure if mine were fine or coarse because I put them back in the intake after removing them.

Don't recall anything bolting around the thermostat, is the temp sending unit already in?

There were a couple of plugs that I noticed in the side of the block that larger in size than the 3 holes for the motor mounts, think behind the motor mounts?

Yeah, that's where mine is.

I'm not sure if this helps as it's mostly the front of the engine but here are some pics:

Just behind the PASSENGER side? Not sure on this one. The throttle-linkage plate will go on the driver's side.

That's a vacuum port. If you don't need it, make sure it gets plugged. Otherwise, there'll be a two-prong fitting that goes in there, one of the prongs will be fairly large for the power-brake booster (if so equiped).

These are into coolant passages or something. I just know that a Chevy knock sensor fits in there just right, and that when you take them out there'll be coolant behind them. Make sure they're plugged as well.

Yes.

Good luck!
