what tranny came with a 82 cherokee (I think thats the year, It has a big eagle painted on the hood, does this sound right?) I need a new tranny in my 82 wagoneer and I can get this truck for cheap. If it's a th400, will it fit? with what mods? I have a 360/727/219/f44/rd20.

If it is an Auto then it will be the 727. All 360 equip wags came with the TF727 from 80 to 91.

so it should be a direct bolt in regardless of t-case? I have a 219.
heres a thought, If i wanted to change t-cases, would it be as simple as fitting in the new one o would there be electronics involved? some of the wiring around that area is hacked and I haven't traced it all.

I am sure that someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I dont see why you couldnt swap. I dont know of any electronics problems to worry about :D

What you describe sounds like a Golden Eagle, which Jeep produced from '79-'80 1/2, or a Golden Hawk which replaced the Golden Eagle midway through 1980 but was dropped for 1981. Unfortunately, if it's a '79 (the more common of the two), it won't work, since it has a TH400 tranny that won't work for your truck.
You'll have to find out exactly what is being offered to you. A good indicator of the year of the truck will be the side that the front differential gears are on. If they are on the passenger-side of the front axle, then the truck is a '79 or older; if they are on the driver's side of the front axle, then the truck is an '80 or newer.

It's a tangent, but does anyone know where I can find pictures of this Golden Hawk deal? I've never heard of it before
Thanks

I can see why a t-case with the wrong drop won't work but why won't the th400 work? will it bolt to my block? my t-case(219)?

The TH400 will work on the block side, all AMC V8s and inline 6s use the same bellhousing bolt pattern. I believe there is something on the end of the crank for the TH400s that is not there on the TF727s??? Either that or the other way around. Anyway, the TH400s came with quadra-trac t-cases which are pass. side drop and the TF727s came with all driver's side t-cases. You could do this swap but you would have to swap front axles, t-cases, and of course trannies. It'd probably be easier to find the right tranny, but then who wants to go the easy route? :D

if the donor chero has a th400 with a driver drop t-case. and I assume a d44 in front, will a complete tran/t-case/propshaft swap be possible? I have a d44 in front.

If it's got a TH400 it won't have a driver's side drop t-case. Not stock anyway. If it does then you can probably just pull the everything from the donor and drop it into yours. And yes, it should be a D44 front. Everything from '74 up has a D44 up front.

While a TH400 from a pre 80 FSJ will bolt up to your motor, but will NOT bolt up to your transfer-case, so to swap out the trany, transfercase, and drive shafts as well as front axle and most likely rear axle so the offset is correct for the Q-trac as well as the front driveshaft being on the correct side. Again assuming this is a TH400 Q-Trac setup.........All this work to replace what I am assuming is a bad TF727??????? UH well OK I guess if you feel like all that work and to buy all the little things needed to do the swap. I guess I do not see the vision  I would just swap out the TF727 it would be easier and cheaper. ;)
