There seems to be some debate as to using ported or manifold vacuum for the distriubtor. I currently am using mainfold vacuum on my and it works fine.

OK will leave it alone then, now can you tell me how to check the EGR valve? neighbor said that could be the problem, but I wont let him touch my JEEP,has sticky fingers .

On most of these vehicles, the vacuum advance is connected to manifold vacuum when the engine is cold and switches to ported vacuum when the engine warms up. This is meant to improve driveability when the engine is cold, and reduce emissions after warm-up.

The debate is about whether it is better to run ported or manifold vacuum all the time, if you can ignore the emissions question.

Re the EGR valve, it's the flying saucer shaped thing on the manifold behind the carburetor. Held down with two bolts. It should hold vacuum and move in response to apply/remove vacuum. The pintle is the part that moves up and down to add or block exhaust gas added to the intake - you'll see it if you remove the valve from the manifold. Take a close look at it and ask more questions if needed.

I'm in florida and have no emission worries , the PO removed all smog equipment and rerouted the vacuum but I am not sure it is right, the truck has run rough since I got it but is getting worse over time. I changed the plugs- cap- rotter -wires and still runs the same. so I turned to the vacuum system. EGR is next on my list. I cant find a schematic on the system with the emissions removed, any idea were to look?THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.:)
