Yes the tank is strapped to the skid plate, if it fall out, your tank will fall out. There are replacements out there, but they can be pricey. Most likely if your skidplate is rusted that bad, your frame is also badly rusted. You can see mine and my repair if you click on my signature and go to frame repair.

You can also make one. I have a one piece plate that goes under the tank. It's real easy to fab up if you have the tools and parts.

I made one for my sons 82 Waggy, cardboard template & some 16 gauge steel, .125" X 1.5" steel for straps. Took me about 7 hrs. at home. Hankrod

Yup. Everyone for some reason calls it a skid plate but in reality it IS the fuel tank mount on 80-91 wags as the tanks mounts to it and then the entire assembly is mounted to the frame. Granted it doubles as a skid plate but primarily it is the mount for the fuel tank.

That's odd, both the tanks I had that rusted rusted along the frame rail, not in the middle. Consider your self lucky!

Mine is way rusty, and until recently barely holding on. the other week when i was under the Jeep, I noticed that my tank and plate had dropped down a few inches below the frame rail.
The scary part about this is the fact that with an AMC 20 rear end, the drive shaft u-joints are centered an close to the tank skid plate. When it dropped, I could barley put a finger between the tank plate and the drive shaft joint
So I took a board and jacked up the tank and replaced a bolt that was missing at the frame rail (only one was there) and rigged a small chain at the back of the skid plate up to a frame hole this seemed to have stabilized the tank and plate but it's time for a rust free one.. oh, the perils.. oh, rust..

well i do have a little rust on the frame rail but like i said its all surface rust nothing all the way through yet so yeah pretty lucky....was toying with the idea of cleaning up the frame and reshooting it there with undercoat then just throwing a couple rachet straps around the tank to hold it in place
