I have done the swap on my 77 cj7. It requires a new output shaft in the th400, an adapter to hook the two together, and depending on the adapter you will need to modify the drivelines. On my cj I had to go with a cv style rear driveline because the d300 output is up higher and the driveline is short. I also had to go with a new rear axle that was perfectly centered. It has worked fine since I did mine. I have two of the quadratrac units laying around if you need one.

another option is to simply swap in a 727 or 904 tranny, which the d300 will bolt right to. the 727,tho stronger, has a big fat pan that causes driveshaft interfearance unless the case is roclocked,or you have a minimum of 4" of suspension lift. the 904 is skinnier and a 2" diameter shaft tucks right up next to it even at stock ride height. i ran a 904/d300 in my GW for a long time.

I'm also looking into a heavyduty upgrade for the Quadratrac...
What about using a NP203? With a GM mount it would bolt to the th400. Most of the front out puts were meant to be used with Dana 44's, right? That only leaves the centered rear axle. How much loss of low range would be felt with the NP203's 2:1 over the Quadratrac's 2.57:1? Would the massive cast iron case physicaly fit under a Cherokee's body with out a body lift?
And finaly, in the meantime, I need some advice to quiet my Quadratrac's klunking under hill climbing. Is this a simptom of a worn/stretched chain? If so, is it at all possible to add links to a good part time chain to lengthen it for my full time?

or build up the 904 get the 300 put it in the 79 and swap plow over to my 84GW and use it for towing, my 79 has a rear posi unit in it hmmm???
ok i can swap the plow to the 84 gw use it for plowing snow and street chores, put my d44 posi unit its for 331 gears in the front axle of the 79 and check its guts in the axle and replace u-joints and wheel bearings get a spare 400/q-track with low unit for a spare then fix up the j- 10 my youngest son oh heck too many jeepstoomany parts lol

If so, is it at all possible to add links to a good part time chain to lengthen it for my full time?YES chain replace...but not with a chain from JCWHITNEY...IT MUST BE A MORSE BRAND CHAIN...listen to me now...or suffer later...I replaced my chain with a no-name chain from "China" and was back to the popping in NO TIME (almost immediatley)…it took me a year to reconglomerate and get the Morse chain ($89+S&H from Kragemotorsports at www.jeepdoc.com) (http://www.jeepdoc.com)) and I put it in last week. I now have gone 4 wheelin, hillclimbing and have done some pavement stompin and it does not pop anymore...I am soooooo stoked after that whole JCWhipme fiasco....I hope this answers you question....

Yeah...and to solve your problem (stretched chain) you would want to take links out of the chain...if it were possible...which it aint....

on the 203,youd have to swap the tailshaft and adapter form a gm th400/203 to make it work. only thing that bolts on in place of a QT is another QT.
you would be losing the low range, but there is a 3 to 1 low range available for the 203.
only real prollem with it is that it weighs as much as your engine smile.gif well not that much, but they are heavy.
talk to scoutgrl-he is running a dodge 203 behind his 727. he could prolly tell ya what it involves as far as front driveshaft clearnace, body clearance, etc.

This swap,(q-trac to d 300)certainly appeals to me.I guess it's personal, but I've never cared much for my q-trac.The idea of a gear case with a
3 to 1 low range would seem fit my needs.
Where can I get an adapter?(besides AA or Novack)
Where can I get the right output shaft?
What did the 904 tranny come in?

Thanks! Finaly I feel I've got the straight answer on that darn popping noise.
New question: I have had my Quadratrac apart and noticed some ware on the brake cones. Since my "spare" case is a part time unit, I added one extra spring washer to each side of the center diff in hopes that I could prevent execesive slipage. In use so far, I seem to have better traction between the front and rear. BUT, low speed pavement manuvering causes some axle bind.
Am I going down the road of destruction?
As to the 203 swap I have a NP203, 12 bolt rear axle, front drive shaft to a Dana 44, and trany to transfer mount. All are from a '78 Suburban.
Is that about all I need?
And with Quadratrac chains: My full time unit has like 96 links and my part time unit 92 links. I will be getting a new Morse chain!
Lastly, for you old-school types: Is the ANY substitute for over-priced Quadratrac fuid besides Lubrizol 762? I've heard it's just non-detergent 30W with limited slip fluid added, but the Jeep dealer insists it's something more(go fiqure).

What did the 904 tranny come in?AA or novak are the only ones i know of for a th400 to d300 adapter.
the 904 i was running was actually a 998 from an 85 amc eagle. any 258 equipped eagle will have some sort of 904 variant(998 or 999 with lockup convertor)
also any 80 and up NP case-equipped FSJ will have either a 904 variant or 727. youll find the 904 behind 6 cyls, the 727 behind the v8s and the 6 cyl with a tow package. the original tranny in my GW was the 727. i tried to run the 727 with the d300,but the front driveshaft hit the pan with no suspension lift and i had no interest in making it work by adding lift or reclocking it. 904 is plenty strong enuff for my 258 and has a better 1st gear anyway. smile.gif
factory d300 low range is 2.61 to 1
further questins? smile.gif
