picked this rig up for 250$ the 360 has a dead hole, so i picked up a good running 360 out of a 74 wag with a bad t-400 off of craigslist.just pulled the old 360 out and noticed that the back of the cranks are diffrent and my tq converter will not work, need to know wut i can do.

Did you swap your flywheel and everything from dead engine over to the new engine?

Inside the crankshaft of the TH-400 equipt engine there is a bushing that you will need to remove to use with a T-727 torque converter. You can use a cold chisel or cut with a Dremel.

It's a thin stainless steel ring. If you cannot get it to move without damaging it (I have gotten them out in one piece before) then use a dremel to grind a very small groove across it until it breaks. Then it will come out easily, and your TF727 convertor will slide straight in.
What t-case does your truck have?

ok got some pics, the 1st one is the old and dead 81-360-t727 engine.the 2nd is the new, good 74-360-t400 engine.i dont see any ss ring or anything esle that can removed from the back of the crankshaft on the new engine, notice the size diff.http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy165/rrexpress/fsj%20project/DSCI0565-1.jpghttp://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy165/rrexpress/fsj%20project/DSCI0564-2.jpg

OK, now I see what you have going on. The engine from the TH400 application is an EARLY (like 1972 or 1973 ish) setup. Those use a cast-iron spacer between the block and the transmission, and an adapter (iron again) between the crankshaft and the flexplate.
Later TH400 trucks do NOT use the adapter case setup, and the rear of the crankshaft looks like your take-out engine.
Currently, 'you can't get there from here'. You need to do one of a few different things to make this happen:
1; put a 'late style' crankshaft (upper picture) into the good engine.
2; sell older style good engine, buy later style good engine.
3; well, there is no 3, because those first 2 are it.
4; actually, there IS a 3, but it involves either putting a TH400 into your truck, or swapping the entire drivetrain to whatever flavor you prefer.
Good luck. It can be done, if you have the intestinal fortitude to see it through.
For my money, if I was NOT going to rebuild an engine, I would sell what you have and find a running later engine.
If I was certain I was going to rebuild an engine, then I would rebuild the early one, using a late-style crankshaft.

lol that sucks, guess i should have did more research before i got to carried away.guess i could sell the bad engine as a rebuilder, and sell the good tf727 trans and find a good t400.can i still use my t case with the th 400.not sure as to the tcase as to wut is ? quadratrac i know that.thanks for the help.

Yes on the 'more research'.
No on most of the rest.

There is an adapter to go from the early Borg Warner crank to a later torque flight crank. I think this is it:

http://i906.photobucket.com/albums/ac264/easyover/Car_restoration_pictures_005.jpg
You would need all of this junk (correct flexplate not shown and is unique) plus a nailhead (universal) TH400, plus transfer case adapters, etc to go TH400 route

I would contact Bulltear or Randy at Performance American Style. They know definitively what adapters, factory and aftermarket, are available for the various crank styles of the AMC V8's
There is also a good, but rather confusing discussion of the various adapters and such in this thread at AMCforums http://theamcforum.com/forum/71-360-going-in-a-jeepcj_topic17376_page1.html
Good luck!
