One more truck to the stable. These things keep popping up everywhere. This one was just a few miles from my house. I put an ad on Craigslist back about the time I bought the first one. This guy saw it and called me about this truck he wanted to sell. Couldn't hardly pass it up. Needs a front fender or some patching but other than that it is very clean.
I haven't figured the year out yet but I think 62. According to the VIN it is a J300 Gladiator. Started life as a six cylinder but somewhere along the line was converted to a V8 auto. There is no motor in it at this point.
If anyone can add to the story and tell me what I bought, please feel free. Thanks.

Boy, if that truck could talk. I like the all business look about it. You need to slap a stoked 258 6-cyl and drive it. Of course a bug bomb in the cab might not be a bad idea. ;) :D

Sweet truck! I feel sorry for all of those spiders that will get evicted from the engine bay.

Looks like it had a chevy in it.

Yeah, that's what we are kinda thinking. Small block Chevy. I have no idea what the transmission is yet or the transfer case. Axles look like 44s.
Don't worry too much about the spiders. We have PLENTY of black widows out here. They'll make more! haha
I was surprised to find that it had 5 lug axles. I guess that's all it needed for the inline 6 though.

No, that was bolt pattern in the early years. Look under the rear, it might have a 5-bolt semi float Dana 60.

I have a donor truck with a running 327 V8 in it. Once I'm done getting the front springs off of it, I would really not mind parting with it if you're interested. I'm a few hours north of you.

Looks like a fun project. Congrats on the score.
I also just got a pair of mystery year trucks. One is frame-less, but has a small back window.

Thanks Tonka, I knew the numbers started at 10,000. Kinda hoped this was a first year truck. Guess they didn't do too many 62s. Is this considered a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton truck?
uoplax13, if I find out that this is a SBC setup I might be intersted in that engine. I haven't decided yet if I am going to keep this one or get it running and pass it on to someone else. I am really loving the direction of my other truck with the razor front end. I'll be in touch.
Thanks jaber. The bad thing for me is that all these j-trucks are turning up for me but I am stuck in my 1/5 acre lot in a cul de sac in CA instead of my 35 acres in GA. Nowhere to put them all! I do love them though. I have a hard time saying no.
shackwrrr, they did do quite a bit of mods. I was amazed, and a little disappointed, that they didn't put disc brakes on the front when they put the power booster on. I didn't know the heater box was different. I don't know how they are supposed to look from the factory. I knew you guys could tell me stuff I didn't know.

You can see where the ross box was bolted to the frame in the engine bay pic though.

Was Ross steering a good thing, a bad thing... or just a thing? Would Ross steering make it a certain year?
So the steering has been changed. The brakes updated.. sorta. The engine and most likely the transmission changed. The heater box changed. I have to check on the axles and the transfer case. I'll be bringing it home by Friday so should be able to find more out about it.

Getting rid of the Ross steering system is always an upgrade

That is nothing. I've been in the bike business for 3 years. You should see how many people send me love letters asking me to make offer on their bikes.
Happy FSJing!!!

Had to put her up for sale, boys. Can use the money from the sale of this one to finish my other one. Anyone interested in a tough old truck project?
