Just wanted to let everyone know there's a 79' J-10, 258, T-18, D-20 and I think it's a 77' waggy no drive train, at Ecology on 27th ave & Jefferson.
Happy hunting!

How can I visually tell it's a T18 with granny? And if it's a D20? Whats a good junk yard price for a bell housing, T18 and Dana 20? Is Ecology a you pull it?

I crawled under it and it's a T-18/D-20 for sure, I couldn't say for certain if it's a close ratio or a granny but what I've read is all the later year Jeep's had the granny. The D-20 is the only TC Jeep ever used behind the T-18, International used the D-300 but they're rare.
Ecology is a U-pull, half price on tues and thurs, they want about 130.00 for the tranny probably the same for the TC, so at half price maybe 150.00-160.00 for all three.
Just a heads up these are passenger side drop, so not plug-n-play for your 81' but if you decide to get them it would be easiest to pull them engine and all rather than dropping them from the bottom.

Thanks to azpackrat for the heads up. I went to Ecology today and in 3 hours I pulled a T18, Dana20, Bell housing and all the trimmings. All for $307.36.
I'm stoked. Been looking for this setup for awhile. Always too expensive or too far away. Was never sure on what adapters I needed. Now I have it all. This is another piece of the puzzle.
After pulling it I've been beat all day long. Beat with a big ol smile on my face.:D

Did you get the tank?
Tercules
04-05-2010, 10:01 PM
There was a plastic tank in the bed with a hole in the bottom (not a good hole either) then there was a metal one and the sending unit was trashed. So I just got a vent knob and two baby blue arm rests to replace my sweet po custom wood ones. I even stopped by the wrecking yard next to Ecology and they just had a stripped 88 Waggy.
I need two tail lights and some door panels and all the Arizona required smog equipment and I'm good to go for now. Oh and a sending unit to do the fuel line corectly.
Anybody know exactly what I need to have installed to pass emissions?
Thanks for the help

I didn't leave any tools behind. But I found a needle nose pliers under the passenger seat.
The fuel tank was still in the truck. I am very familiar with what is under that truck. Thats where I spent my morning.

Terclues the tank is as mentioned still installed, and not punched like they do to most of their tanks, unless someone else got it?
What you need for emissions is the air pump, pump check valves, EGR, catalytic converter, vapor canister, and a sealed gas cap. I have also had them get picky about the oil filler cap not being vented to the air cleaner, and the PCV valve.

emissions? You do not need an emission test in AZ on older vehicles.... there is a way around it.
Tercules
04-07-2010, 05:05 PM
What is the way around it? I thought you had to have emissions on 74 and newer? Mine is a 1979.
AZcherokee79
04-07-2010, 07:48 PM
If you have Classic Car Insurance..example.. through Hagerty like mine., you do not need an emission test. They passed this law about 2.5 years ago and didnt really tell anyone. I had a friend at the DMV that informed me. All you need to do is bring in a copy of your policy through a reputable classic insurer into the DMV, and that is it! The only potential pitfall for some of you is that they can get pretty picky about insuring off roaders. Do not tell them you take it off road. It is an original classic that you drive occasionally on weekends, parades, and car shows. That is what I will be doing with mine. I have been using Hagerty for over 4 years now and they have been great! Best part.. it will only be costing me a mere $180 a YEAR to insure the '79 for full coverage.
So do you REALLY keep a CLASSIC 4x4 ON road ONLY? Or if you need to make a claim, do you intend to report accidents that can be documented on the street? You don't wan't to give an insurance company any leverage if it comes to paying out on a totaled claim. Are there any "classic" insurers that will insure a 4x4 that IS used "off-road"? Just to avoid the possible problem of alleged falsification of application to avoid paying out on a total. I don't trust the insurance companies. I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy!
AZcherokee79
04-08-2010, 09:39 AM
Well this is the first 4x4 that I have insured through them. I have my '65 Cutlass there currently, as well as several 70's VW's, an '84 Olds, and a '79 Monza at one time. You make some valid points, and if you offroad yours all the time.. Hagerty is not for you. Mine will be a mild FR runner now and then, but mainly a weekend cruiser for me, the wife, and the two Great Danes. Hagerty will NOT insure drag racers, off-roaders, etc... but I am not sure on other companies. I have been told that FR Routes can be considered roads by some companies as well. And since most off road trails here in AZ are in fact these routes, I would think it would be covered.

04-08-2010, 11:35 AM
Really depends on if you would plan on making a claim if you wrecked it off road. So if you dent it and fix it yourself (or leave it) then you have not made a claim. I would say no harm no foul.
Gets a litty more iffy if someone gets hurt or you run into someone else off road.
I don't think "off road" use can be completely excluded when you are insuring
a vehicle that was originally equipped as a 4x4 as long as that fact was disclosed. Any ins. co. that insures a 4x4 vehicle would be acting in bad faith if coverage was denied solely due to the fact that the vehicle was used
as originally intended by the manufacturer.
There are many auto companies that advertise there 4x4's in "off road"
settings to illustrate the vehicle's "rugged" capabilities. I'm sure that the rates
are reflective of the intended use including off-roading. This is my concern with NOT disclosing that the vehicle is a 4x4 and may be used as such.
We all may want to check this out to see if there are any exclusions hidden in
the "fine print". If there is no specific exclusion then we should be covered if an accident happens off-road.

One of the stipulations if I recall correctly was mileage, the vehicle was limited to 5,000 a year and could not be used as primary transportation.
I believe you also have to have an appraisal done.
Tercules
04-09-2010, 08:15 AM
I called my State Farm agent yesterday and she said they would insure the j10 but it can only be driven 1000 miles a year or less and it truely has to be in restored or in great original shape!
Well I would drive my truck way more than that or else why would I be doing all this work? and it's in great original shape TO ME but not to an ins agent, I dont think they would appreciate the rust like I do :D
I plan on calling other insurance agencies before I give up and go on the hunt for all the smog junk I need.
Thanks for all the info

It's half price weekend at Ecology. I went down and got the rear bumper off the J10. The fuel tank is gone.
As far as emissions. If went Thursday and passed. Looks like their not doing the pressure test. I didn't need any goofy insurance. Now I can drive as many miles as I want. And I don't have to worry if someone gets injured with me. Insurance to pass emissions. Come on. Really?

My 79 j10, basically it has nothing for emissions.
I started down the freeway to Ecology to snag the Alternator and smog stuff and look at the tailgate of the 79 there but was called back home as the neighbor right behind us's house was engulfed in flames.
I shall try again tomorrow to get there.

My j10 has the 360 motor in it.

Go to Hagerty online... do not need an appraisal. You state the value to them. It has to be worth at least 3500 or they will not insure it. You also need to email them two photos of the vehicle. And let me restate... Hagerty asks a lot of questions when you sign up, including do you off road the vehicle. If you do state yes, they will not insure it. Hagerty will not insure offroaders or drag racers. It is just how they do business.

Tercules, I believe your J10 would qualify for a copper plate (historic vehicle) which would exempt you from having to go through emissions. You just pay an extra $25 a year for the copper plate, kinda like a vanity plate.

I would look into that. I think you may have to also carry insurance for a historic vehicle, ie limited miles per yr, but I was told the copper plate exempts you from emissions.

From ADEQ's website, "Exempted Vehicles" Vehicles designated as "collectible" (requires collectible vehicle insurance, reported to Arizona Motor Vehicle Division by insurer)
From ADOT's site:
HB2357 emissions testing; motorcycles; collectible vehicles
(Rep. Barnes) (Laws 2005, Chapter 76)
Exempts “collectible vehicles”, defined as those that are at least fifteen years old
and that are of a rare or unique design, and those that are used in car clubs,
parades, public functions and included as part of private collections from the
emissions testing requirements in Maricopa County and parts of Yavapai and
Pinal County. Exempts both motorcycles and collectible vehicles from emissions
testing requirements in Pima County. The United States Environmental Protection
Agency must issue an exemption for motorcycles and historic vehicles from
federal emissions testing requirements before this bill may be enacted.

I spoke with a manager of an MVD office in the Valley this afternoon.
You do not need to have the copper plates to be emissions exempt. What you do need, is to have your vehicle insured as COLLECTIBLE with an insurance company that is licensed to do business in Az. Do not insure it as an antique, historic, etc. It must state right on your insurance, that it is insured as collectible. Being insured as a collectible usually limits you to 2500 miles per year on the vehicle, but you will be emissions exempt.

You have to have insurance anyway, why not get collectible insurance?
I'd do it on principal anyway, I can't stand emissions testing. A huge crock of Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogleye, not to mention you have to let some emissions monkey behind the wheel of your rig. The pressure test is my fav. They tell you there's a leak somewhere...might be the gas cap, might be this, might be that, etc. That, to me, is a hassle. But, to each his own.

I don't have it up and running and on the road yet, there for it is not insured at all at the moment. When I get it going, it will either be insured collectible, or registered in a northern county. In any event, I'm not dealing with emissions.

I have collectors insurance on the 73 mustang I own. It has a built 351C and three two barrel carbs so it most likey would not pass the sniffer....
here are the rules:
Model year 1967 and older is exmempt from testing
Model year 1975 and older is sniff tested and they look at your gas cap. They do not lift the hood and there is no requirement for a CAT.
After 1975 model year the rules change depending on the year. They will do a visual inspection and I think a CAT is manditory.
Brand new cars are exempt for like the first two years. Many of the new ones don't get sniffed, they plug into the computer. Of course none of the 'new' stuff applies to our rigs.
One thing to note, if you are full time 4wd they will only idle test you, in park (and visual inspection). You get tested every year if you are full time 4wd. If you are part time they will dyno test you (and visual inspection) but if you pass you can go 2 years before the next emissions inspection.
