Subject vehicle is an 84 GW. Are there any other sources for a new valve other than the dealer?

TIA! :D

Here's the description my brother sent this morning:

What do you know about the brake proportioning valve? According to the IFSJA technical library, the '84 has a "D type". The valve stem at the front was mildly frozen in what appeared to be the forward (normal) position. After a bit of brake cleaner, penetrating oil, and manipulation it now seems to be free. However I am not experiencing the kind of action now that is consistent with the technical article. There seem to be three positions, aft (least amount of exposed stem), middle, and forward; in the forward position there is a spring of some sort that returns the stem to the middle position when I release it. And the stem will remain in either the aft or middle position wherever I position it.

Obviously from the conflicting information in the technical article, I am wondering if this item will require replacement.

You can get an aftermarket one at Summit Racing for $49 shipped. I ordered one as I am going to rear disc brakes.

Yeah, these things are pretty mysterious. My valve thing won't move at all, so I thought it was shot. I posted without much luck. But eventually I got the brakes to bleed out, the warning light went off, and I have good pedal, so I'm going with it!

I read in a generic brake section in a chilton's that you don't have to mess with the valve if you bleed by the pump the pedal method. It said the purpose of pushing/pulling the button was to trigger the metering valve part of the combination valve if you pressure bleed (and possibly gravity bleed???) When you pump the pedal, you trigger the metering valve and it lets the fluid go everywhere it's supposed to go...

Good luck,
Andy

I had one that the pin was stuck in my '82. I'm in the process of replacing it. My rear brakes always felt like they had air in them, and I couldn't get them to bleed right. That was through the pedal, too.

When I had a problem with my brakes, at the proportioning valve. I found a small pin hole in the little rubber plug in the valve. I was able to replace just part of the valve. L.H.

What you want to do is got to this site and study up on disc/drum set ups: http://www.mpbrakes.com
Your valve might be good! They are very good about giving advice on the phone.
