My Chero has what appears to be the stock rims. They are a nice chrome spoked wheel, 15x8. When I got the truck they were very dull and the dull coating scratched off with a fingernail revealing nice chrome underneath. So I tried everything to clean them
3M adhesive remover-nothing
Steel wool-would have taken me forever
Brillo-see steel wool
Dremel with wire brush-just melted it and smeared it around
Finally I figured all the mechanical options proved fruitless so during the lift install when the wheels were off I poured some 5f5 furniture stripper on them and within seconds that shyte was bubbling off leaving chrome shiny enough to shave by. :D
It rinsed right off and now I got a set of shiny wheels that look new rather than 20 years old!
Just a thought for anyone faced with a similar dilemma.
BTW I've got some pics coming soon.

Is that 5f5 stuff in normal stores or is that special stuff? Thank you
PS- Yes I do have the same problem. Got a set given to me but haven't been able to clean them very well.
Thank you Craig

What you cleaned off was the factory urethane protection. It obviously served it's purpose for the last 20 years. You may want to be certain that you either recoat it with clear coat or at least a good coat of wax.

1980J10-any hardware store has it. It's in a blue/white can.
TXJ10-Yeah that was my guess, some sort of factory clear coat. I was looking for something to protect tham with. Maybe I'll have my buddy who paints cars shoot them with some cklear coat.

Any stripper that is designed for stripping wood finishes will work. These are fairly mild and won't harm the chrome finish.

There was a thread about a month ago about this and I used a spray on stripper cheapest one from the hardware store and also got excellant results ,and I did it whle the wheels were still on the jeep, didn't even affect the tires, just hosed it off.

GFD - If you find a CAP auto parts store they carry a line of spray paint made by VHT. One of them is a clear coat specifically for wheels.
Is your buddy that paints cars interested in any side work? I wanted to get my CJ painted.

He is DEFINITELY interested in sidework.
Space is a problem for him right now though. He's got his foundation poured for a garage attached to his house where he'll do sidework but that'll be a few months.
He works at Ira in Peabody and his boss put the Kibosh on any more sidework there. If you have a place to do it with the proper pressure and CFM he'll come out and spray whatever you need. He's a real hustler and does great work. He paints high dollar Audis, Porsches and Toyotas all day.
BTW I'll try to fix that link now too.

Naw it was definitely factory clearcoat gone bad.
Check out my post in GenDisc with the pics and you can kinda see how dull and cloudy they were.

The chromed rims on Timex have rusted in a few spots, is there any way to remove the rust and re-chrome just that small area?

I've used (Never Dull) on alumium and chrome and it works great.
