View Full Version : Seat recommendation needed, Geo, Accord, Volkswagon?
I am reconsidering my earlier thought where I would use the factory Wagoneer seats and have them recovered. The Cherokee seats are trashed and I'll need something to sit on while it's under construction. I can still use the seats from my 76 which are in great condition but they don't tilt forward.
I would like seats that tilt forward when the seat is pushed forward and then return to the original position when slid back, if this is possible. I would also like removeable headreast so that I have a profile as close to stock as possible.
What cars should I look at when I go to Pick n' Pull?

I used '89 mustang seats and they worked fine. Almost a bolt-on. Just had to drill one pair of new holes (if I remember correctly) in the Mustang seats and transfer over the Jeep sliders. Then drop them in. They tilt forward and work great in a Cherokee. I am pretty sure that any seats from '82-'93 generation of mustangs will work.

I have a set of Camaro seats that I plan on using, but haven't actually gotten around to putting them in. I would think that any seat from a 2 door with rear seats should have seats the tilt foward. I don't think that you would want to go with Volkswagen (its with an 'e' at the end not 'o' ;) sorry thats a pet peeve of mine smile.gif ) though, because they don't use a traditional slider system. They have two legs in the back of the seat that slide in tracks built into the floor and a single bar in the frount that slides in a channel. Its not the most conveinent for swapping to another vehicle...

One other thought is that the S-10 blazers have some pretty nice seats and ones from the 2 door models have the tilt-slide-return system...

Anybody got any pics of G-Wag seats?

i 2nd the mustang seats i have them in my cherokee just like dave said they practically bolt right up, fit the front mounting holes to the factory seat brackets and you'll see plain as day where to drill the new holes very easy perfect fit!

I've got Chrysler LeBaron seats and really like them... (I know! I was surprised!) got the nice, wide, leather/upgrade interior versions. Their tracks are a bit wider than the original FSJ tracks, but some cheap steel plate and a drill made a nice & quick adapter.
The only catch is that to get the leather seats (wide, supportive, nice lumbar/leg support) I went with two passenger seats - the driver-side is power and a bigger pain to pull from the junkyard. No big deal, just the recliner handle is between the seat and the tranny hump on the driver's side...
Gotta say, I'm quite happy with them...

I feel the same way when I see Cummings vs Cummins :D Don't worry, lots of people do it. I can't tell you how many times I've seen it spelled wrong in for sale ads and even on enthusiast websites! Has your wife had the Jetta for 20 years, or just been spelling it wrong for that long? If she has had it for 20 years then you don't see to many of them old ones around any more...

Mastercraft suspension seats are what all most of the offroad racers use. The Rubicon model made for the CJ is supposed to be an easy fit into the FSJ. I think these are top of the line.

put a early 80's caddy or toronado/riviera, olds cutlass seat in it...
they are basically exactly like the late 80's Wag seats but alot nicer/comfortable.....
60/40 split instead of buckets...
and you can find one of those cars parting out all over...
man I loved my toro's seats(cloth) they were sweet

The simplest seat swap is from an AMC Spirit. They fit the tracks in my 81 with no drilling, are high back, and tilt forward and recline. The mechanism is strong and reliable. The are basically the same as my Jeep seats, except that they don't recline or tilt, and are low back.

I put wag buckets with the center armrest in my truck. They dont seem to sit as high as the bench and they don't tilt forward. Seems like I had to drill to make them fit, but the truck is a '73. Find chero seats, makes for easy access behind the seat.

JP magazine did an article way back when on installing CJ aftermarket seatsin a Cherokee , Jeeptruck. Basically, it's a bolt-in ; you just have to repaint your seat brackets because the new seats don't hide thm anymore. ;)

It should be noted that the backs of some of the aftermarket CJ seats [BestTop, SteelHorse etc.] don't flip forward. They would probably be ok for use in a Wagoneer, but might be a little restrictive in a Cherokee 2 door.

I sold my Bestop seats becuase the DID NOT flip forward, a major inconvenience with a Cherokee.
I looked around for alternatives from Junkyards, but finally decided to pay $170 for a new seat instead of paying $75 for a funky one from a yard. maybe it's prissy of me, but oh, well.
and I did buy those seats above. the grey/black ones in the corner. the riceboy element of them amuses me for an FSJ.

Are the bolt-holes in the floor the same for the bench-seats and bucket-seats?
When I yanked the bench in my Comanche to put the Cherkee (XJ) bucket seats in, the holes on the brackets didn't line up with the holes on the floor! Who'd've thunk it?
I ended up yanking the brackets off the bench seat and welding up an adapter to mount seats from an '80s Datsun 200ZX Turbo (comfy seats!)

I have some 87 or so electric Waggy seats for my 83 J20. I haven't yet installed them and realize they won't tilt forward. I was planning on constructing a mechanism with a latch at the back and hinges up front to allow me to tilt the whole seat forward. A bit of trouble but where to find electric Cherokee seats?
By constructing my own mount, I can place the seats where I want them in regards to front-back, side to side and up or down. Some angle iron, a few bolts, a hacksaw, vise and some welding when they are fitting right should do it.
Simple...right?
Anybody know if XJ buckets would work in a FSJ? I am just curious because i have seen a lot of XJs in junkyards.

my seats look very suspiciously like marine/boat seats, you might look into boat seats then?......they're comfy though, even though a little ragged out, vinyl splitting, etc....or maybe that's just part of my truck's character....

I just replaced my seats yesterday. I found a nice set in a Ford Probe. I pulled the headrests out a had a set of lowbacks for my Jten. I wouldn't reccomend them if you are looking for a "bolt in" seat. They weren't even close!
