I need a two barrel carb for a '83 Cherokee Chief with a 258.
I do not want to buy new if possible. My question is this carb
the same carb used in the AMC Eagle with the 258 inline 6 engine?
I have access to old Eagles in the bone yard of same vintage.

In my case, both my 81 cherokee and my 84 eagle used the same style Carter 2 bbl.

I currently run a Motorcraft 2100 2-barrel carburetor, and I highly recommend it. I purchased mine on eBay already modified for the 258.

Others like the Weber 2 barrel, and you can get them also for the 258 @ Carbs.net (http://www.carbs.net/)

I wouldn't use the Carter BBD on a dare, and that is probably what the Eagles used.

I agree with Caionneach. The Carter is awful and the Motorcrafts can be found just about anywhere. You have nice air cleaner options also.

look for the 2100 with the 1.08 stamped on the driver's side of the carb body.

Not that you can't get a Carter to perform. But chances are the Carter you choose will have that awful "solenoid" thing in the rear that attaches to your wiring harness, and that's the Carter to avoid. Other Carters are not that bad, but are sensitive to varnish buildup. A good cleaning, and drilling out the jets to a slightly larger size will usually fix them right up.

If you must have a Carter, search for "Nutter bypass" and that will pull up a tech site that gives a good step by step process in bypassing the BBD setup that is usually the doom of that era of Carters. My old Carter had so many vacuum leaks around the throttle body that anything I did to it was futile without a thorough rebuild. It was easier and cheaper to switch to the 2100. :D

Thanks all for the insite.
This is an FYI. I was a proud owner of one of the first 1980 AMC Eagles off the line from Kenosha. In fact I ordered it from the factory in 1979, a 2dr Sport coupe with the half vinyl top. I had it for 12 years and 200K miles. The only thing I replaced, other than tires, brakes, and battery was two alternators. I never had a problem with the carb, which like you have all pointed out was a Carter. Also, that Eagle was the best car I ever had in the 43 years that I have owned cars.....Sorry.

I guess only a few of us had a good carter. Neither of mine had a solenoid. I had to rebuild the one in my cherokee and used the one from the eagle on my cherokee for awhile.
