View Full Version : Oil pressure too high, but no reading on gauge?

My chero is "inflating" oil filters at the moment, but there's no reading on the gauge. Does anyone have the layout of the oil system, as far as where the oil goes first, etc??

I'm stumped, and don't want to try to start it again, until I know I've got this solved.

uhhmn, ive never had this happen to me. but ive heard that about the only thing that would do this is a stuck oil pressure relief valve. iirc, its a spring and a plunger off the oil pump. look for a brass hex about 1" that may be the end of the chamber. anyway if the plunger jams in its passage it can trap the pump pressure in the pump and the filter is the only place it can go. good luck

First thing on my list, tomorrow. I've been talking to Steven79, and that's his suggestion, too. Thanks, Andy

I just got thru rebuilding my oil pump and there is nothing to it. Get you a rebuild kit and clean the pressure relief passage thoroughly. Mine was junked up pretty good. Just make sure that you every bit of old gasket off or it will leak on you. I had to take mine off today to fix my leak.

Under the threaded part where the oil filter screws on there is a metal plate. Under the metal plate is an "oil filter bypass" valve and spring, I have seen the fiber valve worn.

After that is the passages through the timing cover up into the block. The pressure relief valve is just that, a relief valve if the pressure gets too high. If you ar not getting readings on the sender, and you are blowing up filters, the oil pressure relief valve could be stuck. But that doesn't explain why you don't have a reading at the sending unit. It almost sounds like a blocked passage, especially if it was a sudden thing. Take off the sending unit and make sure the passages you can reach are not blocked. You can get to all the passages in the timing cover if you take it off, which I am sure should be a last resort.

Good luck!

Thanks, folks. I appreciate it.

Success! I swapped the suspect oil pump cover, with the original off of my old timing cover. Now my oil pressure is good, at all rpm's, and no more oil filter shaped balloons!! :D

Thanks everyone!

Lindel ... ... That is good to hear!!. I knew of a fellow that popped a couple of filters open. I meet him down at Bono while visiting the Jeep Heaven.
