Real Woody
This '84 Grand Wagoneer belongs to Joe Kulik and he has quite the way with wood. He peeled off all the stock vinyl junk and then laminated real oak veneer to the doors, stained a flame pattern into the wood, and coated it with polyurethane. To back up the flames, the AMC 360 got a swapped-in four-barrel carburetor, headers and dual pipes. As for the picture in front of the building, while it is normally against our policy, we like the weather-beaten building as a backdrop for a clean-looking FSJ.

One of the tings I like most about mine is no woodgrain anywhere but on the door panels... If you are going to have wood though, that is the way to do it...

I keep having thoughts about using real wood on mine, but it spends alot of time outside. It would have to be maintained.

Epoxy will seal any wood, this is what I used for the kayak using mahogany plywood.

or your local west marine has the epoxy from west system.

The issue with Epoxy or polyester resins is that UV will break them down, so if they sit in the sun light for any length of time they will break down.
That is why all the composite air craft and other stuff are painted with a aluminum high load UV blocking paint prior to to the top coat. (Kinda defeats the idea here)
I don't know if some of the marine spar varnishes are better or not. (??)

Covering epoxy with a UV rated varnish or Urethane works very well. I play with wooden boats and have had great success with that.

not too crazy about the red Gwag, might look better on a white, silver or black Wag. :)

Weell, that proves it can be done...

I have been contemplating different veneers for my GW when the body is done. I was thinking I would have to get vinyl printed with whatever I decide on.. Real wood is much cooler than vinyl.

I wonder how difficult it was to get the veneer to track the body lines of the GW.

It needs dark tinted windows, a slightly deeper red paint, some 20" rims (or steelies with baby moons?) and fuzzy dice on the rearview mirror... then it would be groovy.

Normally I think flames are overdone and lame, but that is unique.

Flame ala Crate :p I like it it. Can't imagine the maintenance it would take to keep it nice.
