View Full Version : Motor Screeches and Stalls

I was travelling about 20 MPH the other day when my motor let out three screeches and then stalled. I pulled to the side of the road but, It would barely turn over (like a dead battery). I waited a few minutes and it started right up. I drove it home and took another car to the airport ... it's always good to have a backup when you own an fsj. I don't know what to look for, is it possible that one of the belt axuliary devices seized momentarily? Any ideas?

How was your oil-pressure? Coolant temps? The actual engine seizing up is the first thing to rule out.

I like the accessory idea as well; loosen/remove the belts and try to turn them all by hand. See if they all turn freely. Also check the power-steering fluid level; that pump might be binding up from lack of lubricant.

Normally a screeching sound would be a slipping belt. If the belt was slipping, and the alternator hadn't been charging well, it might not be able to start back up again.

Obviously the motor didn't seize if you drove it home, but I'd look to anything(AC pump, Alternator, or the belt), else being the problem.

Hate to say this, but it sounds like you spun a main bearing. AMC motors are known to to this as they wear out the mains before the rods. Quite often you will hear a very low knocking sound when the motor is started and the oil pressure will drop off to about 30 psi at crusing speed when the motor is warm. The chances of an accessory siezing and stalling the moter at 20 mph are slim as the belt would fry first. Really hope I'm wrong here.

Thanks for the tips, I just got back into town and am going to take a look at it tomorrow.

Spruce,
Leaving it alone for a week appears to have corrected the problem. I checked all the fluids and I'm embarrassed to admint that it was two quarts low on oil. I added oil but, the jeep was still at its same, albeit low, oil pressure as before. (40 when cold, 20 while running hot, around 7 at idle when hot according the the factory gauge). I'm considering replacing the timing cover to boost oil pressure.

Hopefully, this problem won't surface again, I have plenty of others to work on for the time being.
