Picked up a Dana 60 for free off craigslist and i was hoping y'all could help me with some specifics.

It is supposedly out of mid 80's dodge truck. It came sans shafts / backing plates. I have not popped the pumpkin open yet to count gears.

Is this a semi-float or full float setup, how can you tell? Is there a way for me to get a rough estimate of the WMS width without any shafts in it? Sorry for the blurry pic, had to use my phone as i can't find the camera chrager.

Thanks,
-Alan

Edit: 3.54 open carrier, so that will have to go.

By the ends, looks to be a full floater. Look on the diff webs for the model specifics, ie. 60-2 or whatever. Might call a local dodge(now fiat) shop and ask, if you know a couple of year range for it.

Thanks for the reply, thats what I was thinking with the ends looking like that. The only casting number i see just says "60".

What is the general opinion on the 60 FF versus a 14 Bolt? The original plan was 14 Bolt, but its hard to pass up a free 60. I will need new shafts anyways and seem to remember reading that there are 35 splines available. The long term plans for the waggy include a TBI 454; Think this would hold up if I went to 35 splines? I know a lot of it comes down to driving style, and I like to think I'm pretty easy on axles: I drove a YJ sitting on 14x35x15 Ground Hawgs for years on the stock D35 and D30 without any problems.

Thanks again for all the help y'all; its great to be back into building Jeeps and especially back on this board.

That's the same as the Dodge 60 that's under my Chief. I had the spindles bored and 1.5" 35 spline shafts made for it. Same size and count as a D70. That's about as strong as you can get before thinking Rockwell. I may truss it at some point...

I'll also be running a TBI 454 and a dblr.

Since there are no shafts you should just start with having the spindles bored and 35 spline shafts made for it. Of course you'll have to get at least a 35 spline Lock-Right to replace the side gears and run the new shafts. The original shafts were 30 spline.

If you post the BOM somebody will have the book to look it up and tell you exactly what truck that came from.

Looks similar to the one I just put in my wag. I went with a disc brake conversion kit, $315 shipped... can't beat it!!! Comes with bolt on brackets, 2 calipers, pads, hoses, and rotors, as well as inner wheel seals.

You'll probably need some greenies and elbow grease and mild soap and water to find the BOM. It's stamped on the tube, pass side, close to the center on the same side as the diff cover (rear as it is mounted in the vehicle).

Here's a link to dana/spicer catalog with a list of all the BOM's...
