View Full Version : 727 scrapping update: shimming starter?

It turned out that the scapping noise I was hearing was coming from the starter. The ring-gear has knocked the tips of some teeth out of it, and it looks like it's hitting the nose-cone a little bit too. I loosened the starter when I was experimenting, and the noise completely went away. I ended up putting a washer in as a shim between the starter and the tranny on the upper starter bolt, and I'm thinking maybe I should do the bottom one too since I'm still getting some very slight scrapping noise when I accelerate hard. So my ultimate question is this: has anybody ever heard of shimming a starter on an AMC before? I know Chevy guys do it all the time, but in my 12 years of driving I've never done it to a Jeep.

Chev starters you do have to shim but AMC starters mount different and you don't shim them. If you need to shim yours then you need to fix the starter. The bedix is prolly weak and not pulling back far enough. Fix it before you trash the ring gear on the flywheel or flexplate. A new bedix w/gear is cheap. Last one I bought was $8 at Napa but that was a couple of years ago.
