View Full Version : Synthetic instead of TCL-1 (quadratrac)

I recently bought a '77 J10 with quadratrac. I've never had a qt before so I know nothing about them. I'm currently replacing brake pad/shoes to get it to stop. I've got the engine running but I haven't replaced the qt fluid yet.

I was wondering if anyone has run a synthetic 30 wt. oil, like Royal Purple, in their qt? or should I just stick with regular non-detergent 30 wt & limited slip additive?

I'll post pics later today once I put the 17" toyota black wheels on it. I hope they don't rub! :drivin:

Thanks,

-Keith

Running syn motor oil isn't going to cancel out the need for the friction modifier so what's the point of going syn?

Some synthetics have friction modifiers already mixed in...

I know Mobil 1 gear lube does, not sure about the specific requirements of the QT though.

Try it out, worst you can do is destroy the diff in there:rolleyes:

I would stick with TCL-1 or the factory AT fluid. You definitely can't just use 30 wt oil. I think someone had posted a formula for mixing your own QT fluid. I've never done it. You might try a search and see if you can find the thread.

Thanks fellas. I'll probably just pick up some TCL-1 from BJs. I can't wait to drive it for the first time!!
