thinking of doing the tfi and have a few questions. i was checking out the tfi page at irbob's web site, (cool page, irbob's a credit to all fsjer's for taking the time out to put up such an informative page) and at the part where he changed out the coil plug?, there's three wires coming from the new plug, one of them connects to the top of a small cylider piece,(looks kinda like a small camera batery). now i have seen this small piece on other wags in junk yards and in engine pics, etc etc.. but my wag does not have one of these. what is it?? what does it do? is it necessary for for the tfi? if not, what do i do w/ the 3rd wire? secondly the plugs used on his page where self crimping, not that there's anything wrong with that, but sounds like way to much room for error for a novice mechanic like myself. what other plugs will work for this?? thanks for any helpful responces that i can get....AL GO red sox!!!

It's a RFI capacitor. It's there to cut down on ignition interference in the radio(whine you sometimes hear). You don't really need it unless you notice this, especially if you run a hi-power amp.

Just cap it off if you don't add it.

i'm an idiot!! what i meant to ask was what other typ of plug WIRES that work with the tfi, the ones that irbob used were a self crimping type of plug wires and there was too much room i think with that for me to screw it up. i was more curios about plug wires thar wre already caped. thanks again for the help guys.....Al.........GO RED SOX!!!

Your not an idiot...Got ya...plug wires...not as critical as the gap on the plugs but of course it's like anything as to what money you want to spend. Anything from the $20.00 auto zone special to the Moroso Ultra 40 Race Wires at $150.00.
The reason I went with the Universal fit wires is that I'm into custom fit stuff and enjoy putting things together. That's me. I take a little longer to do things but at least it's the way I want it when I'm finished.
I would have to recommend useing 8MM minimum to get the advantages of the TFI. Anything larger is made for race type setups and money that could go toward something else. Hope this helps out some.
Remember that this is just my opinion and works for me. I didn't dyno test 10 different wires and come up with the best. I didn't do any scientific studies to show that this is what everyone should use and it won't hurt my fealings if you put a 10hp briggs under the hood. I don't get into all the "this is what I use and you suck if you don't think so" kind of talk. I'm just another Jeep guy like you that is learning all I can to keep my baby on the trail. Most of all have fun.

thanks irbob for the help, when i said i suck i meant at typing!, i meant to typ what other typs of plug wires work, not plugs, the first time. 8mm i'll make sure that the ones i get are. i'll be using your tfi page to guide me through it. thanks again for all the help...AL...GO RED SOX!!!

Bosox Al...
I just did the TFI today. I followed irbob's parts list and instructions to the letter... and part number. The crimping thing was actually very easy. I'm with you - I thought this was going to be a huge opportunity to screw something up. It was a piece of cake... Once Kimbrough showed me what to do... and did most of it... but it looked really easy... Really though, I did a few and he did a few. It's pretty straight forward.
The only difficult part is getting the plugs closest to the firewall out. This is easier done from under the truck... really. Lay down and reach up - it's 100% easier.
I felt the difference when I pulled out of Sitting Bull's driveway - the Jeep doesn't stumble and sputter. It goes! I can't tell if there's any more power. It feel more like fuel injection - better throttle response and no loading up in the carb'.
I can't wait 'till tomorrow to see how it starts cold!
Good luck... ya gotta do it!

Manhattan, sorry I had to leave before you were done. I would have liked to lend a hand. How does Bushwood run? I was thinking more about your problem with your rig, and I'll ask a few people I know and trust what they think. Maybe we can get together sometime to tweak things. Btw, did ya'll reset the timing today at SB's?

BosoxAl,
I just did the TFI thing myself, awesome isn't it?
My problem was that I had a bad splice further down the line. Nothing to do with the upgrade.
